The 1.8 side opens up magic. 2.8 is pretty good too.
You can get a relatively inexpensive 17-50 that does 2.8 all the way from Tamron.
The kit lens is a waste of time because it only opens up to 4.5 when zoomed out, and 6.3 when zoomed in.
But you will want that zoom range. The 50, on a crop body like the XS is about 85mm instead. Youre a long way from a normal field of view. You want a 20-40mm to get that 35mm feel. Thus, the wide end on a kit lens is comfortable.
