More gig photography

hey /p/, so i'm shooting a gig this weekend with my Canon 30d, was after a little advice.

thinking of getting a fast low light lens, have heard the canon 50mm 1.8 is a good gig lens - i've shot a couple gigs/djs before and found my kit 18-55mm is just not too sharp, a little slow therefore underexposing for a sharp shot, and/or fucking noisy. I'll be up front and close to the action, so 50mm should be ok...anyone have any experience with the sharpness/speed of this lens? I'm not using a flash, I hate bugging the band/punters.

Use the 50mm and a monopod.

Set the camera to Av mode, at f/2.0, and ISO 800.

Prefocus on where the singer's mic stand is, and when the lighting is good, burst mode shoot. Do this a few times, then repeat the process for each band member.

Doing anything else is overthunking the job.

Depending on the gig, there's some things you can get away with.

Most typically I shoot ISO 800, with 1/100 shutter. I used to shoot my f/3.5 - 5.6 kit lens and get decent results, but only if the stage is well-lit. I haven't gotten to shoot any concerts since the summer (ie since I've gotten some new lenses) but my advice is to shoot manual (Av never gets the crazy lighting right), don't be afraid to underexpose slightly, and don't be afraid to ramp the ISO if you don't have enough light.

Don't worry about a monopod.

Concerts are tricky but not impossible. If your shots are shitty without a flash use a slow, rear curtain flash sync for insta-art concert shots that look neat. That's if flash is allowed, be sure to ask.

Get the 50 f/1.8, it'll come in handy for a lot more than concerts.

try a 50mm 1.4 or a 35mm 1.4 from sigma on canon mount
~iso 200
forget a tripod
try about a 1/60 exposure or maybe a 1/30 at the slowest
biggest thing is getting more interesting composition.
