EF 28-135mm opinions

I already have a 50mm f/1.4 and a 24-70mm F/2.8L lens from a previous camera.

I'm buying a new 40D and for what is barely $180, I can tack on the EF 28-135mm f/3.5 - f/5.6 lens. Realizing the cheap price, is this lens at least semi-decent? I'm mostly interested in the longer end (135mm x 1.6 = 216mm).

Also, has anyone tried it on a full frame camera? Someone I know has a 5D and might borrow it every so often, so I wonder if it will work nice on that sort of format.

'salright. Decent walk around lens. Don't expect too much out of it. I have the EF 28-105 mm f/3.5-4.5 due to the larger aperature. Performance is about the same though. Some people complain about build, but that's about it. I use 35mm so I suppose I do use "full frame" just fyi.

If you want a telephoto, get a telephoto. Don't get a wide-tele that overlaps with your (presumably much better) 24-70L.

The 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 is much better than the 28-135. I've owned both. The 28-105 is sharper throughout the range, has a slight edge on speed, is lighter, and has a slightly better build.

The 28-135 is an okay lens, but I would save the 180 bucks and get the 28-105 for about a hundred off the ebay.

Too bad it doesn't have IS. I haven't used the 28-135, but I have a 28-105 and it's a good lens for the price range. Mind you, I've replaced it with the 24-105L because I'm a gearfag, but it's capable and compact.

I wouldn't waste the 180 bucks for that lens. Any shot you want with that, you can get with the 24-70. Not really worth it to buy a lens that overlaps that much. Anyway, anything after 70mm on the 28-135 will be at a f/ 5.6. You may like that, but I personally like to be able to stay at a 2.3 - 3.5 no matter the zoom. If you are interested in the more zoom, I would bite the bullet and get another L-series.
