Some film changes its color at the faintest exposure to light, some other film doesn't change unless it's brightly lit for a prolonged period of time. This sensitivity of film is rated in standard units called the ISO sensitivity scale.

ASA stands for American Standard Association, ISO for International Standards Organization.

ASA is just the old name, you should use ISO for both digital or analog.

film is reactive to light because of a light absorbant pigment that is put onto the film. Higher ISO have this distributed in larger bits, so to absorb light more easily. Lower ISO have this distributed in smaller pieces, and therefore have less grain but cannot absorb as much light.
