Hi /p/, being a tripfag today. So I've been looking around, and from what I see, if I want to make money doing what I love (photography) I should probably get a formal education in Commercial/Advertising photography. I live in Western NY, about 4 hour drive from RIT, and from what I understand, RIT has one of the best photography programs in the country. I've already found that I could make an ok career at being a wedding photographer (my computer recently died, i only have things I backed up, I didn't save much from weddings, I hated them, I have some other shit I can post you guys can rag on me for) Basically, I either take out student loans and go to a photography school, or I stay in this shit fuck town and die a nobody with nothing to show for it. RIT is going to be about 13,000$ per semester, a Fancy photography school (brooks, NYIP, NESOP) is going to be upwards of 19,000$ It also seems like RIT has more of a solid reputation, too. I read about brooks being investigated for Fraud, and I dont know anybody who ever went to NESOP. RIT just seems more "legit" Thoughts? Opinions? Ideas? Similar Situations?

Or you could go to school for something like business (Also cheaper), And use your knowledge to run a profitable photography company / studio / whatever It gives you more to fall back on, and is just as respected, if not more so, than a photography degree (which no-one except a few commercial companies seem to care about) Also you probably could 90% of everything they teach you in classes by experimenting, or simply reading up online / taking pictures.
you've been bumping and deleting and reposting this shit non stop. fuck off you retard. i vote you stay in your shit fuck town and die a nobody. you are too stupid to do anything else.
Your photos are garbage. Don't bother trying to make a career in this area.

RIT claims to teach the business angle. thank you for the input. I'd love to go somewhere in europe, but thats not a reality. With the way things are right now, I can move to boston with a friend and pay a disgusting ammount of rent, have an awesome friend to jam and smoke pot with while I'm going to school, but I dont think I'd get as much out of a photo school in boston as i would RIT. And with the business aspect of things, I figured a Photography degree at a good school would put me in more of a familiar situation with the equipment I'd expect to be using in an advertising/commercial situation.

I'm rather underwhelmed with what you've presented. You've failed to tell us what type of photography you want to do for a living, which would effect the type of school you should go to. I do not know anything about RIT, but a quick peek at the website it would seem like the right school to go to if you want to do photography for businesses, like advertising work. If you want to do fine art photography, I would still go to a school like RIT that doesn't seem to focus to on fine art. Fine art training is mostly useless. Being able to take good photos is important, but not as important as meeting people, being able to sell and advertise yourself, and being able manage your own affairs if you end up self employed. TAKE A BUSINESS AND AN ACCOUNTING CLASS if you intend to be self employed.

>>295310 I'm saying DON'T go to a photo school,
The weight of the school is behind your degree, business degree's carry more weight on their own, and the schools are generally more respected aswell.
When you sell yourself as a photographer your portfolio is all that really matters, (that and who you know) Spend your free time at another school taking pcitures and you will rack up almost as many good shots as you would have from a photo college

>>295318 You need talent too and I don't see a no-talent ass clown like you having a hope in hell of getting anywhere. Especially with the butthurt and BAAAWing you've shown in this thread already.

>>295319 I'm not that worried about the portfolio, I'm just worried about getting access to higher end equipment and becoming familiar with it.
Its really not that hard to get a few suits, print out some business cards, and play the part. I just want a better knowledge of studio lighting, and more importantly medium/large format cameras. Medium/large format with digital backs, too. I know I'm never going to afford something crazy like that just doing freelance weddings and bullshit.
Any ideas of which schools would offer a business course pertinent to this predicament ?

Wow, the OP is a whiny faggot in this thread. If he can't handle this without crying his eyes out, and acting like such a tool then he'll never be able to handle working in the real world. Give up now. The photos shown so far are really shitty too. Your prospects are not looking good. You'd be better to invest your money than waste it on a degree you may not even finish and even if you do it will never pay for itself. I've seen better work from kids before they enter a community college course. Why would anyone want to employ a talentless crybaby idiot like you with this kind of crap as a portfolio?
