Many digital cameras have the option to put this kind of graticule over the screen. Use it.

Put your subjects in the crosshairs, preferably horizontally opposite or diagonal to each other.

I was sort of playing with the lighting. I thought the illuminated portion of the foreground (dead center of the picture) was a nice effect (but as a nub, I wanted other opinions). Point taken.

It's not a subject because it's spilling off at least three edges and is pretty much a flat surface. Step back and frame it if it's that important.

It's a pretty texture, don't get me wrong, but that's all it is. Texture's for wallpaper and drapes.

The streaks of light in the background are actually more interesting than the subject. Interesting light draws the eye; in this case, it pulls my eye away from the driftwood, which is mostly in shadow. The lighting does nothing to bring out the texture of the wood, either. For texture, you probably want to get in even closer if possible; otherwise, go further out, frame it, give it some sort of context. All we have here is "piece of wood", you didn't do anything with it.
The take away is, it doesn't matter how interesting the subject is if the light sucks, and google for tips on composition.
