rules for bulb?

i would like to write with light... and then off camera flash my body so that the image shows me in it as well.... now i just wondered if there was some sort of aperture rule when shooting in bulb or a long expose like 30 seconds...... any other tips on shooting in bulb would be nice as well...

my aspirations are similar to the end product of this photo.....
