What should I buy, D40 with Nikkor AF-S 18-55 mm lens or more expensive Panasonic Lumix FZ50?

Is entry level DSLR really much more better?Also, is it possible that because of the cheap lens that comes with D40 it will produce equivalent or worse pics than bridge camera like FZ50?

Yes, if you don't mind that it comes with an interchangeable 3x zoom lens instead of a fixed 12x one.

Depends on how you use it. But this is often the case in bright outdoor conditions where the superior high sensitivity performance of a DSLR sensor doesn't play a role.

Don't assume that the lens built into the FZ50 is any better; Nikon lenses are, almost invariably, superb (Canonfag here, BTW). I'm not sure how meaningful the Leica name on the lens is.

I don't see the point in bridge cameras like this. But if you like the FZ50, then get it. I'd go for the D40 without a moment's hesitation, but that's my own personal preferences speaking (that I'm averse to menus, I change ISO and WB from shot to shot and like buttons for them, I like buying junk lenses from eBay, etc).

Clarifying that comment: There are some photos where you *want* to have a long DOF. There are circumstances in which you have a long DOF and have lighting in which you don't have to worry about noise too much. For this, a bridge camera's disadvantages aren't as significant. The intent of my comment was to point out that using a bridge camera does not automatically mean boring "snapshots".

Just clarifying. :)

Video and ultra zoom is cool, but image quality is more important for me, I guess.

Forget about video. Video in all compact and bridge cameras is suitable only for something like "Here's my fucking cat playing with a fucking ball", and even then there's a 99% chance that no one ever will bother watching it because it's easier to just give the ball to the cat one more time.

Of course, at the end of the day you can take great pictures with any type of camera, but the everything-in-focus factor is really what separates P&S pictures from DSLRs. If you're gonna take those kind of pictures you might as well have a camera you can keep in your pocket all day IMO.

I don't think so. I haven't seen any "decisive moment" shots on /p/ yet, so I doubt it really matters. If the shot is good enough, I'll drive by and get it in better light. Usually when you see shit happen, and you don't already have your camera out, you missed it. Even if it's a foot away in your bag, shitsux.

Planning, and managing and becoming aware of light is way more important than grabbing the shot. As experience shows, (and flickr, and /p/) there are very few shots I've seen that are good (as in not snapshots that are processed to hell) that were made because the photog was like, "thank god I had my camera w/ me".

Or rather, ALWAYS HAVE INTENT

I care not about the fact that you are buying a new dslr nor do I about you, but I will offer this small piece of advice. Try both of them and see which you are more comfortable with. Don't let /p/ decide for you. After you have done this.... buy a Nikon D40 w/18-200VR.
