Nikon D40, good for cheap bastards who can only afford a dSLR under $500 (without buying used) and for soccer moms using Ken Rockwell auto mode. pretty much fail for anything else unless you plan on using that saved money for better lenses or a better body later on

This is wrong, they d40 is a great camera, first off it is lightweight so you can carry it everywhere with ease while taking photos of your pets/friends/whatever, it's cheap so you buy better glass(its the glass that matters), the ergonomics are great if you don't have big hands and it has a bright contrasty LCD panel that lets you see your art after you have done it.

D40 isn't too bad a camera, but you would be better getting a d50 or d70/d80. the d40 is lightweight for a reason.

don't go nikon unless you already have nikon SLR lenses... go pentax or canon... and that's coming from a nikonfag!

The Olympus E-4xx are lighter, smaller and cheaper.

Is it? Every other company also offers a model in the same price point as the D40. AND, those won't be gimped because Nikon decided not to put an AF motor and simple meter in it.

The Nikon D40 also does not have a focus motor, this way it has less internal parts making it a more solid camera, who needs an internal focus motor anyway, all the new lenses coming out all got integrated focus motors.
