90% sure I'm getting the e-520. I was wondering, how does it's sensor perform in low light? I do a significant amount of night shooting. I was also drawn to it because of the live view + digital zoom which would be usefull for getting accurate focusing for astrophotography.

Does anyone know what the e-520 is like in low light, or for that matter, what olympus cameras are like in low light?

I hope you're trolling, but out of all DSLR brands, Olympus is a bad idea, specially for the purposes you mention due to their tiny sensors and generally inferior low light output.

For astrophotography, stick to Canon or Nikon, seriously.

I know canon has a dSLR designed specifally for astro stuff, i think they did a 20Da and a 30Da to mark that is what they were meant for.

olys are a bit noisy, live view will make this worse. i read somewhere that the some of the noise is caused from the sensor heating up so you should keep the live view and shit off as much as you can.

the digital zoom in live view is really only useful if you have something really bright to focus on, i use a lazer pointer sometimes but thats not going to help with stars, but then again you just have to focus to infinity.

have a shitty pano i made that shows you cant really focus if its really really dark

my e-510 is great though im sure youl like it but im not sure its a great idea for what your looking at.

Long exposures at low ISO = good (as most CMOS sensors are)
Shorter exposures at high ISO = fail (ISO 1600 is mostly unusable)

It has live view, just an *extremely* limited version of it suitable only for checking focus for astrophotography.
