Hey /p/ i need advice with getting my mom a lens for xmas. She has a Canon Xti with the standard kid 18-55mm lens. I was looking for something with a little more than that, just a general purpose lens. I'm looking at a 28-80 or a 28-105, should i be looking at something entirely different? pic related

28-80 or even 28-105 isn't really different enough from the 18-55 range to be worth it. The 28-80 especially is basically just the 18-55 plus a 1.6 uncrop. There aren't a lot of situations where the extra 50mm is going to be worth the hassle of swapping lenses.

I'd recommend either a real telephoto (like the EF-S 55-250) or a fast prime (like the EF 50mm f/1.8 or the 35/2.0), since those would actually open up more shooting opportunities that her current lens won't let her shoot.

And I, too, would fuck the shit out of your mother.

Although the 50 1.8 is fine and dandy, since I bought one, I've been wanting something wider for more general purposes, like a 35mm f2

Yeah i keep seeing those recommended throughout /p/, but for her would you guys think it would be worth sacrificing her ability to zoom?

you are correct sir, she will lose the ability to zoom. But do you realise what she will gain? Compared to her current 18-55, this lens has added sharpness, less distortion and has the ability to let more light through (better shots in low light) and also allows more freedom with depth of field.

see, no lens can 'do it all' perfectly, so every lens is a compromise. this is our suggestion.

I feel exactly this way too. I always find myself having to move to far away to capture everything I want with the 50mm. Really want something closer to 30mm.
