Use a larger aperture, slower shutter speed, you don't need 1/2000th a second and a larger aperture will give you more detail.

For the first one, why would he want everything else in detail?
Mmmm, look at that background.
It's a photo of his kids, he wants to single them out.
The second one, maybe a slightly smaller aperture, like f/4 or something, but not much past that, just enough to bring back more focus into her face.
