I design models using a 3-up system. After sketching up how I want a model to look, I do a top, side and front view of the model in Corel, making sure all the measurements are uniform in all 3 drawings. Surfaces that are facing one of the views at 90 degrees are going to be the exact same size in the template, while surfaces at angles will have to be stretched to match the distance of the angle. For rounded surfaces you use pi (3.141...) and determine the angle of the circle visible. For instance, if you have 90 degrees of a 3" diameter circle you would multiply pi times 3 then divide by 4 (since 90 is 1/4 of 360). Some of it is easier to show as opposed to explain. If you play around with geometry and paper modelling enough, it'll come to you.
