I posted this in another thread:
>at a dance somewhere (during high school, it was for a festival)
>a friend and I are just walking around, talking about something (homework, probably -- I don't remember)
>she gets asked to dance by a guy, says yes and off they go
>I sit down somewhere off to the side (don't want to be a third wheel)
>guys occasionally smile at me but for the most part it's just me feeling like absolute crap while my friends are having loads of fun
>the next year, I just brought a book with me and read it outside
>still wore a dress, though; there was an awards ceremony after and I didn't want to be rude by looking sloppy
>"Why are you wearing a dress, [name]? You're not even going to dance, you hate dances like this."
>"Whoa, [name]'s a girl! I just thought you were a robot all along."
>"We need to get you a boyfriend while you're still wearing that dress!"
>Haha, yeah, that's funny, guys, but no thanks, just call me when it's over so I can head back to the theater
It's still painful to recall now. Unfortunately, not much has changed with regards to the "I just thought you were a robot all along".
