I was reading OHCS, and it mentions on page 53 (3rd ed) that "Steroids...lead to irreversible changes in connective tissue". Does anyone know what changes and why? I had a quick google, and the links I opened seemed to go along the theme of muscle hypertrophies faster than the tendons, hence damage - but is this what OHCS is referring to?

I have heard this several times before and many professors have said it, but none have ever been able to tell me a physiological reason for why everyone believes this.

From what I have read, normally for a muscle to have a large amount of hypertrophy, it has to be stressed over a long period of time. The connective tissue is able to adapt to the stresses over that time period too.

When the cross sectional area rapidly grows over a period of months instead of years, the muscle contractions can greater than the tendons can support.

From what I have studied, only pathogens, not androgens, can compromise connective tissue.

Lol, are you the guy wanting to start his first cycle of roids so he can squat 500lbs?

I seriously have no idea why anyone would think that was a smart idea unless they were some sort of sportsman or someshit.

I think you mean -directly- compromise then if roids are still going to result in them being damaged.

No, I'm not - just a med student reading Oxford Handbook of Clinical Surgery (OHCS) and realising a gap in my knowledge.

I'm talking about oral steroids, used for many common conditions btw, not body building ones (although I'm sure they share very similar properties, the old man with COPD, or little old lady with arthritis is going to be less concerned with going to the gym to get massive) - so if we take muscular hypertrophy out of the equation, why do steroids lead to changes in connective tissue?

Still confused :(
