An anonymous, ludicrously wealthy donor has provided as much funding as you need provided it's used to expand this deep sea science base. As you can see, an initial hub is provided. It has machinery that produces oxygen from sea water (just underneath it) and it gets electricity via buried cables from the hydrothermal vent to the right. The three-colored lumps under the vents are precious metal deposits. In the same style, add your own modules. For marine biology, for growing weed, Cthulu research lab, I don't care. Just add onto the existing docking rings, and add similar hatches to your own module to indicate where the next person should add on. Stake your claim, /Sci/. This world belongs to us. :3

I'd come along if I could and generally get in the way and irritate people with questions about hydrothermal vents (when life was discovered around them it was one of the most important discoveries in human history in my opinion) whether anybody was remotely involved with studying them or not. I brew a mean burbon so I could possibly run a canteen. I doubt many of you drink now but you'd probably develop a thirst after a few weeks of isolation in the habitat. And I can fillet fish fairly quickly, which would free up somebody else to do something more important. Although I'd be interested in eating food made personally by chemists. Obviously it wouldnt really matter where the canteen was as long as it was out of the way so that may be a bit of a wildcard.

GLORIOUS /sci/entists, I present to you the very clean and efficient, Ocean Thermal Energy Technology. This looming tower that is floating so vertically in the roiling waves of the ominous ocean may come off as a waste of space, but the technology is actually a very useful heat engine. The temperature difference at the surface of the ocean and the bottom of the ocean creates a gradient in which mechanical and work can be extracted from. Where does the temperature difference come from? Well, the sun of course! I have connected the platform to the grid, or what I think is the grid...fix it if I did it wrong. Feel free to draw over the long vertical area, for it merely serves as a placeholder.

>>3274624 Is this based on Sterling engine technology? I know they use this to reduce cooling bills in cities near lakes (I know of Toronto), but for direct energy production
Also, in general, I think that individual showers in the apartments is a bad idea. A communal shower/toilet room would be smarter, and reduce cost greatly.
Finally, I think we need a direct hall from the Booze room to the food room. It seems risky in the case of emergencies to have to run through a glass domed (and thus highly prone to flooding) forest.

The biology department plays a large part in funding the habitat, actually. All novel bioproducts discovered by its research teams is patented and turned over to the semi state-owned pharmaceutical company. Profits are used to further fund the university, help buy infrastructure for the habitat, and line the pockets of residents.

To make it a bit more realistic, I think you could fade the water in the caverns from blue to a slight darker green than what is used for the walls of the caverns. This would give the appearance that you are looking at the wall of the cavern, and that the depth of the cavern is going out of the page, as opposed to into the page at the moment. This would mean that there could be rock behind that wall, and the vents could be possible

Like why the living quarters are almost directly above a hydro thermal vent
Also why the LFTR isn't farther below the base and why it doesn't have a passive storage area isolated from the main reactor area.
And why the submarine bay is almost completely exposed instead of built into the seafloor.

Using sonar detection equipment, I find anomaly sound waves which our experts determine to resemble, oddly, "snoring." They explain that this can't actually be snoring however, since it's too large of a sound to be coming from any known living organism. They pinpoint the origin of the sound to be relatively close to our aquatic society, and in fact, under us. I propose digging to the source, but many disagree and my proposals are rejected repeatedly. While I am resubmitting and resubmitting, a group of curious men like myself begin in secret our project, excavation "snorlax." The residents are beginning to get suspicious even though we've taken every effort to be clandestine with our dig, but today is the day.We have discovered a large hollow cavity where the source of the sound is coming from.
