ART IN THE MAKING
SPOOKY THEATRE
You will need:
shoe box with lid (for the theatre), tissue paper/colour paper/scrap material (for the spooks/ghosts), sharp pair of scissors (be careful!), round-ended scissors, sticky tape, felt-tip pens, thread, straws, paints and large brushes.
Prepare your box
Step 1
Turn a shoe box on the longer side. Cut out the top, using sharp scissors (get an adult's help), leaving a 2-cm border on each side. (Use a ruler to help you draw the borders.)
Step 2
Cut a hole in one side, so you can shine a torch into the box with the room-light off.
Step 3
Paint the inside of the box for the background.
Step 4
Cut out the centre of the shoe box lid, leaving a 2-cm border all the way around.
Step 5
Stick the lid onto the front of the box.
Make your ghosts
Step 1
Pinch the tissue paper in the centre so that the corners hang down. Draw on black eyes.
Step 2
Cut out strange shapes for spooks from colour paper or scrap material.
Step 3
Jumping-up skeleton: Draw a skeleton on white paper and then cut an outline round it. Fold it. Glue the bottom onto the floor of the box. Pull the thread to make it jump.
Step 4
Tie a length of thread to each straw. Stick one end of the thread to your spooks and other characters that you have.
Step 5
Cut a trap door out of a piece of paper. Attach a length of thread and a straw to it. Stick one side to the floor so that it can move up and down.
Put the act together!
Place the straws across the box. You can move them around to animate the characters. Shine a torch through the cut-out hole. For more special lighting effects, paste different coloured cellophane paper on the face of the torchlight.
Now add the 'spice' to the spook: vary your voice for sound effects! Shout, scream, whisper, cry, laugh...! Make up a spooky story: "Once upon a time, there lived a stupid ghost named Dumboo..."
Get your audience involved! Ask them to make all the spooky sounds or continue the story. It's really great!
You can try different scenes with this activity: circus/aquarium/classroom/beach fun, and more!
