Soriano really doesn't project well. He's a swing at anything player with huge power and speed, but that's about it. For the first couple of years in Chicago, he'll probably post VORPs of 30-40, meaning he'll be valuable for about 3 to 4 wins by himself. But that's not going to take Chicago into the playoffs.
ALso, this is an 8 year contract. He may be helpful for years 1 and 2 and perhaps 3, but by then he'll be going on 34 and well into the natural decline phase all athletes go through. Seasons 5 through 8 should be severe dropoffs for him, and he'll still be paid 17 million a year to do it.
