The Angels landed a centerpiece for their holiday table with the addition of free agent Gary Matthews Jr. on Wednesday. Matthews agreed to a five-year, $50 million deal that includes a partial no-trade clause, according to an industry source. The deal is pending a physical.>five-year, $50 million deal >five-year, $50 million deal >five-year, $50 million deal As an Angels fan, I am fucking pissed at this waste of money.

As a fantasy baseballer, I am pleased that Chone Figgins will be sent back to second base so he doesn't lose his elegibility for it in 2008.

i heard Figgins is actually going to be playing third since they couldn't land Aramis Ramirez. Howie Kendrick is the second baseman of the present/future. Matthews Jr. is 32 years old. WTF? never realized he was so old already. his one decent year, 2006, happens to be his contract year - usually a bad sign. dont like this signing one bit. *Sigh*...Stoneman

Maybe the worst deal so far this offseason. Although I think Juan Pierre's is worse. Soriano's was just bad, but at least he'll do something over the next couple of years.

yea, my LA teams are both reaching. i dont know if its desperation or what but Pierre and Matthews are not impact signings although they got paid like they are. Angels are still after Manny and looks like they might give up the same players that they refused to last year - Santana, Shields, some top prospects. Such desperation

Sorry guys but fuck baseball, too much boring and numbers not enough athleticism.

I would rather pay Alfonso Soriano $50 million A YEAR, with all of Soriano's shortcomings in mind, than pay Garry Mathews Jr. $50 million over five years. It would be a better investment.

>>23845 At least if you overpaid Soriano, you'd get steals and homers. Matthews did OKAY in a contract season, and will probably stink it up next year.
I'm still fuming.

As an A's fan, I love this deal. $50 million for a backup outfielder? Awesome! Sometimes there are advantages to not having any money. At least you don't have to watch YOUR team make horrendously stupid signings, you can watch other teams do it.

I don't get how there's so much commotion over paying $51 million for Daisuke ("Die-soo-kee" if you ask ESPN) Matsuzaka, and nobody even flinches over this Gary Matthews bullshit. I'd rather gamble $100 mil (or whatever his contract will end up being worth) for a potential star pitcher who has a nasty gyroball than waste $50 mil on someone you KNOW is going to suck.

Yes I know, I too am an Angel fan. Art Moreno said he was gonna pull some major strings. I thought he was implying Manny Ramirez, A-rod, or Soriano. Mega BUllShit.

As a diehard Dodger fan and Angel hater, I must extend my congratulations to the Angels, since your bad contract for Matthews is far better that our bad contract for Pierre. At least Matthews is not the premier out-maker in the major leagues.
