>>11909300The two areas might be different, but to the NHL, California is California. The Kings were their experiment to see if Hockey would work in in Southern markets. They were the only team to be down south when the teams originally expanded. After the Seals left, there was a sour taste in the NHL's mouth about hockey in California, so they avoided moving a team back to the area, and were more likely to move the Kings away. But the Kings remained relevantly successful, even with really bad ownership moves, that allowed them to stay put. When Gretzky was traded to the Kings in 88, hockey in LA became much bigger, and they started making a bunch of money, so the NHL was more open to moving teams back to CA.
