To be fair there was a novel where a dude went undercover. He was black with red hair and green eyes and was a Rabbi. Customs didn't even bat an eye at it.That's how mixed the genetics and culture are.This was downplayed a lot in the 3050's unfortunately, but the older stuff and the newer stuff both try to hit on the more interesting cultures more.

Hell just the FWL getting almost zero fiction for the longest time was part of that. Double Blind would be a fun novel for you to read to get a little more flavor on the whole deal.

How strict is the whole "Warrior Caste only ones to use weapon" Business in the Clan system?

Like, do members of the Merchant Caste who travel on jumpships go unarmed, do they have accompanying marines onboard? What are the chances of Technicians and Merchants on a Merchant Jumpship having personal sidearms and even rifles?

Yes there are marines assigned to Jumpships, usually Elementals. See Exodus Road for a good story involving that.

Weapon use varies between clans. There is a nice clanner illustration in Living Legends that shows normal JS crew for the Smoke Jags carrying sidearms.

I haven't read through all of Wars fd Reaving yet, but the new iATM's are fucking scary.

Not only can they work as streak Infernos, but also streak magnetic pulse. Two iAMT 7's one with infernos and the other with mag pulse.

15 heat, -2mp, and +2 to hit and that's before heat effects. If you're anywhere near your heat sink capacity you could easily get -4mp and +4 hit with a shutdown roll.

AC 5/2's are specialty ammo-weapons.

They became shit-tier with the rise of 3039-3050 era tech upgrades, so Catalyst started adding in specialty ammo choices.

At which point the guns that can afford to half-shot a ton of ammo (yep, the 2's and 5's) become superaccurate plinkers, like when you have one of those speed-demon targets you can then hose down with precision ammo, or flak to hose VTOL's and other airmobile units.

Heck, it's the solution Catalyst has put in for just about every non-energy weapon on there save the Gauss Rifle, because it's the boss. The height of badass Clan missile tech are those iATM rounds, Inner Sphere now has area-effect ammo (even if it's less damage, it just plain doesn't miss) and other delightful tricks.

Besides, the DRG-1N is the troll heavy. It's fast, it's got unlimited ammo works, and there is nothing so easy to make into Kuritan fuckery the second you get advanced ammo for one. It begs for precision ammo for the AC and a ton of Thunder LRMs to lay down the pain. Until then, just look at it as a slightly demented Griffin and play with it that way for 3025, the ranged mobile game 'Mech to go with the slow sniper Panthers and the backstabbing Jenners.

Or you could just whap em with a few plasma cannons and follow it up with the iATM mag-pulses. But the iATM is more flexible delivery.

I've gotten some good use out of light AC/5's mounted in an arm with AES. Carry percision ammo for things that move, standard ammo for things that don't, and armor-piercing for shooting at tanks.

Tanks hate armor-piercing ammo. Crew Stunned. Crew Stunned. Weapon Jammed. Driver Hit.

That's true. AP ammo in a standard or light AC/2 or /5 is a nice way of screwing with tanks. Especially bigger ones. Not so effective on 'Mechs though.

Last I heard - and this was 4 months ago - the price was going to be "in the same league as the intro box set". I'd say 50-60 bucks

As far as the mechs, apparently the Fire Moth master was destroyed and remade 2-3 times while they were trying to get the poor fucker to cast. It's being replaced by another design, the Koshi/Mist Lynx IIRC, but the rest of the box set will be the entire 3050 Clanner list. I lust for the Mad Dog in plastic!

TL:DR The original Clan boxset, but with the Dasher swapped for the Koshi.

Basically, the Protos were originally conceived as a less resource-intensive "micro-mech", mounting REAL mech weapons, and with more maneuverability than Elementals or other battle armor.

Problem was, the cockpits had to be shrunk to fit the frames, and they couldn't quite fix the balance issues. So they jacked washed-out Warriors from the failed Aerospace genome, pumped them full of drugs, gave them implants that addict them to the Proto and eventually drive them completely insane, and made useful soldiers out of them.

The whole thing was the idea of a group of captured Smoke Jags held by the Jade Falcons, who went on to work semi-illicitly behind Khan Pryde's back , leading into the Reavings...

Game-stats wise, many of the Protomechs are excellent, but they are, frankly, fucking ugly. The Gorgons, for example, mount a mech-scale LRM-10, a full tonne of ammo, and an ER micro in 8 tons. A full point costs less than an average Medium mech; they stack like vehicles, hit like Lights, move like Clan Heavies (alas :P), and the entire goddamn point activates simultaneously. Did I mention that they effectively get a ~6+ save against any and all hits coming in?

I run 2 points in my Blood Spirit Supernova (mixed points of Gorgons and Sirens, for fire support), and they've only disappointed in their looks..

Kinda a go between a mech and battle armor. 4 - 6 meters tall, also had some of the worst design around, they always looked like their name sake. As if the mythic figure / animal was picked first and then they just built something to look like it, strapped a fusion engine to it, strapped a weapon or two to it, mixed genes or aerotech pilots with midgets, gave them funky tattoos and called it a day.

Guys, why are we giving it such a huge head, there is really no reason, it unbalances it and takes up a ton of weight. Can't we leave it out, aff?

Huh, interesting. Downloading now. You know, I really like how dynamic the Battletech universe is. The game universe progresses in-game along with the growth of the franchise out of it, and you can trace the line of technology pretty easy, it seems. I mean, hell, they let video games and artists and whatnot make their own mechs and just put them in the game later on

I should also point out that only the particularly desperate and resource-starved clans generally actually field protos. You usually find them in with the Turkeys, Blood Spirit, and the Hell's Horses (although supposedly all of the Homeworld clans, at least theoretically, have access to the tech).
Pic is a Harpy - a fairly shite combatant (3/5/3, 1 MGs with a half-tonne backing it up), but it's only 2 tons and costs less than a Savannah Master... Great for wrecking IS battle armor and infantry spotters.

That's actually always been what brought me in as well. I've run a single Merc company off and on since the Clan Invasion, writing their history as I play. Granted, that's with a bit of refluffing - both to remove my, ahem, youthful indiscretions in fic writing and to account for the various forces I've rolled up. They've chugged into the Jihad with an orphan's brigade and serious political tensions, so I wouldn't be surprised if I find myself playing a very different force come the end of the Dark Ages.

And, of course, Blood Spirit has almost certainly gotten the shaft (again), so when I pick up Wars of Reaving the Supernova's gonna get some work..

Pic is one of my favorite mechs, 3055's "Watchman" - a Davion militiamech made from spare parts and pure hate; it's one of the last Succession-wars tech mechs made outside the Periphery, yet it never fails to kick ass.

Pic is another mech I like: the Brits made a Komodo-analogue out of the Crusader, mounting something like 12 Mediums on the poor sad bastard. It's nearly as horrifying as the Nova S if you can close with it

So /tg has put a wild hair up my ass, and I'm rebuilding Derek Has-Been's Atlas (as seen at >>16277380 ) into something that sucks less. Currently resculpting the upper arms: turns out that once you whack the retarded spikes and shit off, a half-decent mech starts to show up.

Problem is, I lost his right arm's Gauss rifle. Got any suggestions for what to put there? I'm thinking a RAC or two, or maybe a plasma cannon and some jump jets.
