Hello /tg/.

I am DM'ing a 4e D&D game on friday via IRC.

I've played 3.5 in the past, but i've never DM'd, also all the players are new to the game.

I'm using the Kepp on Shadowfell level 1 campaign.

So anyone got any advice? Or any useful programs to use? Right now all i've got is the official dice program from wizards and some encounter manager i haven't checked out yet.

The books i have are: Players handbook (and 2), Dungeon masters guide (and 2), Monster manual, Martial, Arcane, Divine, and Primal power, adventurers guide, and manual of the planes.

The premade campaign should make things easier.

However, I'm pretty sure I remember the Keep on the Shadowfell's last encounter is a level 5 encounter and will probably kill your players.

Just read through the module you're running and you'll be fine.

IRC can get a little hectic, but have an OOC and IC channels.

KoTS was also my first 4E module that I DM'd, and it's very heavy on combat (like a lot of the first few 4E adventures). Make sure you're aquainted with the setting and plot of the adventure. Also, make it so that players can find nonviolent solutions to some of the early fights against the Kobolds and Goblins - I found that that made it a lot less of a slog.

Your first session will probably just be Chargen, so be ready and willing to answer all questions. 4E honestly has been one of the easiest systems to DM in my opinion, so you can actually focus less on system mastery and more on fun. Good luck!

Bump off a point or two on all the Defenses of your monsters, and bump up their damage by the same. I'd also reduce HP by about 10%. Core 4e works pretty well at Heroic, but it has a few hiccups. Mostly in the monsters, so it's easy to fix.

KotS is tough, but make sure you're using the updated version found on the Wizard's website. Aside from that, makes sure you let to players know that they can do anything they want in combat, or anywhere really. Read up on Page 42. It's the best.

Keep on the Shadowfell is the worst module ever published by WotC for 4e. Seriously.

Run the Slaying Stone instead. It's got Generation 3 monsters, it's got more balanced and exciting encounts, it's got updated and sensible skill check DCs, it's got better skill challenges, it's got a more engaging storyline...

It's just plain BETTER in every single respect.

You know what else is a totally boss module, possibly even better than Keep on the Shadowfell? Reavers of Harkenwold. It's in the Essentials Dungeon Master's Kit, and it's totally epic even if it's for level 2 PCs.

Its actually easy to run, I've seen a very fun lets play of a campaign people did using it over on something awful, they used mics too of course. Lol actually they did incorporate a few glitches with the maps tools into the plot though.
