New guy here, getting ready for my first tournament in a week or so. Any openings I should look at? Suggestions for other stuff to brush up on?

Not totally new, just always lose to the old guys at the chess club I play at. People who don't really play much aren't any trouble anymore.

Hey yo, chessfag here.

It's been a long time since I played in tournaments - I got to about 1850 rating, so I wasn't a master or anything.

I'm going to assume that you're at least familiar with the usual tactics: Fork, skewer, pin, double attack, discovered checks, that sort of stuff.

However, if you haven't looked into overall strategy much (pawn structures, knight outposts, backwards and passed pawns, "hog row" rooks, open files, open vs closed positions / knight vs bishop) or feel you're weaker in that area, I'd recommend reading "Reassess your chess" by Silman.

As far as openings go, pick one as white and know the counters to it.

Playing e4? Know French Defense, sicilian, how to avoid the trap in Petrov's defense, and e5 openings.

Opening d4? Know Kings Indian, Caro-Kann, and d5.

Know your endgames -- this is where a lot of players are weak. Learn which files pawn&rook vs rook is promotable, and which are not. Know how to zugzwang opponents in endgames -- moving to create a pause where an opponent makes a mistake.

Old people whore Sicilian and symmetrical respones like it's going out of style. Suggest looking into fiancettos or gambits.
