What exactly does it mean? 28mm scale, 32 mm scale, 54 mm scale.

Is it the height of the model? I wish everyone just stuck to base size, but then again, the world isn't run by GW.

Pic is a 32mm "scale" model, though I still have no idea what the fuck that means. How big is she compared to a GW human?

What "scale" does GW use from this kind of chart?

GW use 28mm "heroic" scale on their warhammers (while the Lard of the Ring ones is smaller), if I'm not misstaken. So that one there would be a bit bigger I'd expect.

The scale is from the ground to the eye of the miniature on a normal human scale model.

Obviously they're not all exactly 28mm or whatever, but miniatures in a given scale bracket should be compatible with one another.

I have that model! Was thinking of using it for my next 'paint along' thread. Been practicing my flesh just for her.

28mm and 32mm are the most common ones you will see. From memory 28mm is most of the Lord of the Rings range, whilst Fantasy/40k are 32mm. Heroic scale is, from memory, where they make things a touch larger then what they're supposed to be and exagerate the features so the 32mm model may be something like 34mm or 35mm, when it's supposed to fit to the 32mm range.

Also keep in mind that the measurement is from foot to eye height, not top of the head.

Twilight Knight Pinup there is 32mm heroic, but she is actually taller then the marines or dark eldar I have her next to. Find picture attached. She would make a nice barbarian or somesuch, fantasy scale I think.

It means the models have exaggerated features for better readability.

So they have bigger heads, bigger hands, bigger weapons to help you tell exactly what they are from a distance.

model scale is supposedly the distance between the ground and the eyes of the model. This varies quite a bit, but that's the benchmark.

Also, "heroic" scale means "disproportionate for dramatic effect," so emphasized heads and hands to make the key features stand out more.

I know this was already answered, bu the answer was kinda buried.

To be fair, the Heroic Scale is kind of a legacy thing. When they started off making miniatures the sculpting and casting techniques weren't so great, so the larger heads and hands were a technical consideration.

As the techniques improved, they kind of got stuck with the heroic scale to keep their models in line with each other.
This is also why the older plastics aren't great on that front. Orcs, old skaven clanrats etc.

I'm getting the Forsaker pinup. Probably going to convert it into a Valkia model or something. I love Warhams Funsy, and I'm kind of wondering what else I can sub Twilight Knight and the Forsaker pinups other than WoC and VC armies.

I don't have those particular models, but very similarily posed from the same company are all roughly 29mm to eye and 32mm to the top of the head. I can't find that one poor IG I have left to measure him though.

Anyway, one is a Line Kazak from Ariadna, the other is Ghulam from Haqqislam, both from Infinity game.

6mm is very common for large battle games, for example games workshop's EPIC.

EPIC (Armageddon specifically)? Nearly all of them. But support is iffy as it was shunted off to specialist games after GW fuxed the 3rd ewdition and pissed off all the old players. Armageddon fixed a hell of a lot of the problems it had but there was little support for it by GW so you have to treat it like a non-GW game and actually look around for models for some ranges.

Not too hard though, plenty of other sci-fi/WW2 and onwards 6mm scale miniatures and games out there.

Oddzial Osmy produces some stupidly cool 2mm stuff, you can easily spot an Abrams from Leo2, which is kinda impressive. I know Future War Commander is basically scale-less when it comes to models so you could use it there (or Cold war Commander, or Blitzkrieg Commander, basically the company has a whole set of games working on the same common engine)

Why? sure, the infantry are pretty much denoting entire companies instead of individual models, but so are the tanks at this scale too. Next step from 2mm is chit-based strategic theater level so it's hardly suprising though.

Don't forget the scaling for non-game models, like ww2 stuff and trains. They read like 35:1, 48:1, 72:1 and more.
If a model is 48:1 for example, it means 48 mm is 1m in reality.
The scale is displayed like that because here we have models based off of real things, which works fine for people who are interested in that stuff.
It sucks for mini-wargamers trying to find conversion parts for their models. Hardly anything fits, and if it does, it's likely to fall somewhere in between of the 35:1 and 48:1 scale, further confusing you.
Also, this stuff is built to real life proportions. While a 35:1 soldier is huge compared to a space marine, his weapon will be half the size of a bolter.
If you do decide on using these kind of models, you're best bet is sticking with the vehicles.

The scale for scale models is usually given in the format 1:35, 1:48, 1:72, etc.

1:72 means that the real world counterpart is 72 times bigger. 1mm on the model is 72mm in reality.

At the end of the day though I am a huge fan of companies which just tell you how fucking tall the model is, Hasslefree Minis do that and it is really useful cause it is nice being able to plan some variation into a group of adventurers.

25mm are the old historical figs, which now look small cmpared to 28-32mm figs

25mm heroic are Reaper figs, which are really 28mm figs.

28mm figs are 40K2 figs.

28-32mm figs are newer GW figs and most PP stuff is 32mm
