One thing, though, is that 40k fluff is described as all coexisting simultaneously. 40k fluff consists of a collection of myths and rumours, and each one of the tales are possibly true.
People don't like the importance that he gives to the Ultramarines and now the Grey Knights, the larger than life heroes, and the powerful units and rules. On the other hand, 40k would probably be pretty bland and boring without those over the top heroes. Ever read the Necron codex? Sure, the stories are cool, but it's... bland, and not very well thought out.
Mat Ward's rules are perhaps some of the most balanced out there. Is a unit expensive? It's probably powerful. Each unit in a Mat Ward codex can be useful, as opposed to a Cruddace codex where about half of the units are completely fucking useless.
I'm looking at you, Ratlings, Ogryns, and half the Tyranid codex.
