>last time: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/14729642/ >the irc on sup/tg/ is #CommanderQuest You spend most f the rest of the day patiently observing your foes from the observation deck of the gatehouse. They seem to be jointly preparing for another assault, and fortifying their camp against the coming storm. Two of their number sit cross-legged atop abnormally large siege towers, two of the 7 so sized towers they poses. You already know that Wulf has moved his meditation to the top of the gatehouse, after having eaten all of his rations left uneaten for the last several days in one sitting. On a full stomach, and judging by his demeanor, a fully cleared and prepared mind. Ready to fight his own personal war. In the distance Tassadus is riding thermals, diving and weaving, every arrow the Uurlanthi archers fire missing him, some by inches, most by feet.. "Commander, do you have any orders for the storm?" Sansa asks from behind you, her voice affecting in its usual tone, phrasing and candor for business.

The rest of the night passes uneventfully, save all of the men staying on alert. The balitae get hasty coverings, and the fields are filled with caltrops. You pace and plan, Kyria carves runes slowly and carefully, a pair of dwarves from the city studying her books. No sun rises through the clouds in the morning, and the crow of roosters and chirping of songbirds is overwhelmed, or silenced by the howling of the wind. The skies are as black as midnight, the rain already heavy, though not a single bolt of lightning has lanced the sky yet. By midmorning, the entire city is hiding, and peering out of windows or from under awnings, getting steadily wetter. All save for Wulf, who stands atop the gatehouse tower facing into the wailing wind and driving rain, his posture aggressive, cloak tearing back away from him in the wind, Tassadus perched on his shoulder. On the top level of the gatehouse's south tower, the one your protege is perched on, Jayne, and two of the life elementalists sit meditating, sending strength and energy to the young man, Lena pacing nervously between them, waiting in her combat robes, arcane designs thick on her arms, and visible, thinly, down at her ankles. The first bolt of lightning stikes midway between the uulanthi camp and the city of Northmont. The crater it leaves is nearly 15 feet in circumference according to your stonesense, and half as deep. The thunderclap knocks many of the men on the wall to their backsides. The next bolt is shredded in twain, one almost striking your walls, the other nearly the enemy camp. Then the storm begins in earnest, scores of lightning bolts erupt in the sky, half of them going unused, though the others begin to dance and snake, smashing into walls and siege engines, though none seem able to strike towers or trebuchets.>cont'd
Pax !uGYNBMPzOs
Until noon Wulf commands the storm calmly, unmoving, his arms crossed at his chest, unflinching even as the tower explodes next to him from lightning strikes. The men hoot and howl, cheer and taunt, almost overcoming the storm at every bolt that strikes enemy soldiers, or ruins a catapult. By early evening the storm still rages, the enemy still waiting. Even if you had wanted your men resting they would not have been able to for the tremendous roaring of thunder engulfing the city. As night falls again, Wulf smashes one of the smaller siege engines, and the men cheer, though subdued by sleepiness. The elementalists are working in shifts, save Jayne who faithfully remains to support her young friend, and all of them are dripping sweat with the effort, and Jayne is soaked worse than she would be from stepping outside from it. Onward Wulf battles, though by early night he is leaning heavily into the wind, hands back and clenched into fists, his face sunken from exhaustion. The land is a blasted hellscape about the city, mud like rivers flowing towards your pits, or away from the battlezone, and onward the storm rages through the midnight hour unabated in its wrath.>cont'd
Pax !uGYNBMPzOs
In the small hours of the morning, the amount of strikes on both the city and the enemy camp begin to skyrocket, as if the dueling arcanists are desperate to pull every last ounce of power from the storm. Your soldiers had been trying to sleep in shifts when it became apparent that the enemy was not striking during the storms full wrath, though the thunder prevented them from getting more than a Felixsians Rest. The walls, and arrow shields take multiple hits, as do the outskirts of the enemy camp. By late morning Wulf scores a decisive hit, obliterating the top of one of the oversized towers, and an enemy elementalist with it. The top of the tower simply disappears, and you see the entire enemy camp seemingly leap up at once, as if all save for the ones struck by Wulfs Wrath had been suddenly awakened by the tremendous thunderclap that accompanies the strike. Wulf topples backwards after that strike, though no more lightning is to present to be utilized. The storm quickly dies down to naught but a moderate rain, one that would take an hour to drench a grown man. the enemy camp is mad with activity, and you suspect that they will strike within an hour, though bereft of many of their catapults, some of their trebuchets, and a good portion of their smaller siege towers, they will still be more than capable of a staggering blow should things go poorly for you.

Do we have more of that oil we made from uurlanthi corpses? If so, how much? While the rain will fuck with most of our fire-based attacks, oil doesn't mix with water and won't give a single fuck! If we have only a small amount, we create a few 5-10 man teams (say from blackbird's unit), each with a pot/jar or two. When the enemy gets siege towers to our wall, the men throw the jars into the mouth of the siege tower's assault ramp. The teams would either work with a fire elementalist to light oiled rags going into the pots, have the elementalist throw some fire in there, or someone would just throw a torch with the pots. unit objective: deny enemy the use of any siege towers that reach our walls, even if it only works until the oil burns off. You try to focus your elementalism, but another stone annihilating itself against the gate, and several smashing the wall near you, coupled with the intensely uncooperative muddy earth simply causes sloughs of mud to shift back into, and mostly cover the already nearly full pit in front of the northmost tower. Luckily, Laelith sets most of the western holes and divots in the tower ablaze, nearly countering the disaster of your attempt at elementalism. The archers continue to rain fire down on the enemy troops, their own still ineffectually firing on yours. The sounds of fire and panic rising from the city behind you, and the steel serenade already loudly sounding from the northern wall, it all pauses for a brief moment, as a brilliant yellow-white flash can be seen from the south wall. You turn to see one of the smaller towers at that tower simply gone, and a good portion missing from the grown tower as close to the wall as the ones bearing down on your face of the wall are. "When the enemies living tower reaches us, you and I will cut our way to the thing, and you will use your vine to rot and disease the thing." you instruct the man next to you, who nods and closes his eyes, focusing himself. The levies hit the wall first, their ladders up and men scaling at a speed achievable only by uurlanthi soldiers. The smaller tower at the north edge of your wall is the first to contact. Laelith sets it ablaze just before its door drops, and men armed with longswords, shields and platemail come spilling out, impacting Gaius' well ordered ranks and seasoned soldiers. the fire in the tower grows as pots of blazing oil smash into the men and the tower. The dwarves of the 65th begin firing back at the elves atop the larger tower that is slowly lowering its ramp to the wall, still protected by the tatters of the arrow shield, though you know that that will not last for long. On your edge of your section of wall, the levies strike seconds after you use your elementalism to stop the tower you have as until now left alone. It is barely clipped by the hole, though with its rear stuck the men are forced to get out to push and lift it out. The southern smaller tower is slowed to pivot to align with the section of wall it is moving to, and will be disgorging troops soon. Knowing that you will be very much stuck in the combat soon, you stay back, only fighting those levies that come to you, conserving your strength. The northmost living tower drops its ramp finally, and the colorful chaos that is a group of uurlanthi knights spills forth. With stoic determination the legionnaires of the 196th receive them, while their flanks butcher levies and men at arms alike. The latter only being slaughtered as the tower that they rode to the wall was reduced to splinters by the fury of the balista battery that turned to fire into it. You notice Gauis squared off against a quartet of knights, all in like heraldry, brothers no doubt. You see Sasna and Kyria reposition the 65th rangers to fire into the men disgorged from the enemy soldiery as they leave their tower. Men at Arms again, the repeaters cause massive damage to the unit, though they continue to charge forth from the tower. You continue to slaughter levies, before you look back to Gaius. The old legionnaire stands astride one of the brothers, a second limping back, a spear embedded deep in his right shoulder, Gaius only sporting a single cut to his face for the trouble. you are pleased to see that the center living tower is now stuck in its tracks, though you cannot hear anything from inside it over the chaotic roar of combat.

"SPLINTER THEIR TOWERS! PUSH THEM BACK!! CUT YOUR RAGE UPON THEIR FLESH AND SHOW THEM WHAT THE LEGION IS CAPABLE OF!!!!!" you bellow out, your voice cutting above the roar of the battle. For a second, time seems to freeze, even the ramp of the last moving Living Tower as it drops in expectation of striking the wall seems frozen. Then, your maniple surges back towards the wall, carving a blood path through the uurlanthi soldiers accosting your city. You lead the elementalist through the levies, and straight into the blademasters that disgorged from the tower, their badges and blades split evenly, indicating two units. Mere feet from the tower, you find yourself stalled, and being pushed back towards the line, still slowly inching forwards from the surge, of Degnarian soldiery. A glance behind you inbetween fevered blocks shows the 65th still being charged, the front rank already readying their battleaxes, Sansa standing with them, knives drawn. To the north the dead knights number still grows, though a handful are too far from the maelstrom of blood and steel that is Gaius, though his armor is visibly rent in several non-vital places. Again you step back, again you are unable to get on the offensive against the elfs standing opposite you, grinning as he stabs his blade through the meat of your shield arm, toying with you.>SKILL GAINED! >Inspiring Cry: A roll of 25 or lower results in all friendly units going up one morale level and all foes going down one (orange is the lowest they will reach from this technique). You sidestep your foes downward slash, and sever the elfs sneering head from his body. You block a blow, and dodge another to pick the head up off the ground "WHY ARE THESE DOGS STILL ON OUR WALL??!?!!" you shout, your voice still slicing the clamor and insanity of warfare "PAINT THE WALL WITH THEIR BLOOD, SET OUT A FEAST FOR THE CARRION BIRDS!!!" you bellow, the rain cleaning your blade and armor, still driving. You then proceed to turn and hurl the severed head at the nearest elf, stunned, you are able to step up to cut him down, and between yourself and the elementalist you are able to reach the tower. Sansa cannons forward along with the rest of the front rank of the rangers, light infantry with battle-axes, they die, but are not slaughtered. Sansa is beautiful in her wrath, leaping and spinning, her entire body a weapon, expertly wielded against Uurlanth. Another blademaster, most of them already spread evenly throughout the enemy forces at this section of wall, comes at you, bringing your focus back to yourself. Again you are unable to best the elf, though the man you escorted to the tower now has his plant arm grown into the Tower "A little-... longer..." he strugles out, his whisper of a voice barely audible to you over the sound of the battle. A blade drops on his growth of an arm, embedding itself in the thick fibrous appendage, even as it grows from the mans forearm, and up to his shoulder before your eyes. You kick the elf back and nearly over the edge of the wall, but are again accosted before you can kill the soldier. Instead you settle for trying to ruin the ladders on the wall. Spikes of stone slice out from the wall and nearly push and shatter the things, however, your aim is not quite enough to accomplish that. You hear the call for hammers, and know the respite is very temporary.

You throw up a rotating shield of stones around the life elementalist, as you throw yourself into the fray with a redoubled effort. Several more blademasters fall to you, as your men press hard against the levies stranded on the wall. A pary-thrust-kick allows you to see Sansa, who is now covered in both blood and soaked with rain now, standing victoriously over the last of the live men at arms, the unit smashed by a flank from a portion of the 454th legionary. The rush of a pair of blademasters forces you to observe the battle on top of you more closely again. However, when the wood shifts to a sickly, flaking rotting green the man draws back the space that would be his left pectoral and shoulder now dominated by his Syptionus vine "done" he announces, as you see a trio of robed urlanthi stumble from the bottom of the tower, vomiting. Balista bolts knifing through the enemy formations, you suddenly become incredibly optimistic about this battle, all you have to do is survive it.

As you backpedal with your life elementailst, you block a blow from a pusuing elf, and manage to skewer all three vomiting life elementalists. However, a trio of blows from the blademsater opens your sword arm. and right thigh through the armor, not deep, but enough that you are unable to get out any intelligible commands. As the enemy forces on the wall are whittled down to their elite, the sergeants begin to fall back to their lines. Realizing that victory is most likely yours, the exhaustion of your men begins to show. The archers mostly begin firing to deal with the elven archers atop the Living siege towers, clearly hoping to prevent any heavy objects from being dropped on the arrow shields keeping them from being taken to pieces in the night. The slaughter still continues, though the vigor of your soldiers is clearly flagging with rest now in sight.

"FINISH THE JOB!!!" you shout, plunging your blade into the chest of the nearest elf. You immediately feel the retalitory blows, though your armor catches them, you know that you heard ribs give out. An arrow sprouts between the elf in questions eyes, and you turn to see Sansa standing, firing through the ranks and into the remaining Uurlanthi on the wall. The fighting continues apace, though most of the enemy sergants escape mostly unstcathed. Sighing relief, you move to cap off the battle by destroying the siege tower clinging dead and rotten to the wall. What surprises you, is when the stone spikes you put through its base cause it to... explode. Unfortunately, most of the men that could discern why the dead tree went up in a cloud of splinters and rot, taking a decent portion of your walls eastward face with it are already passed out. In fact, as the rain slows to a light patter, you realize that many of your healthy soldiers are simply opting to sleep on the wall. Not all that surprising when you see the moons shining through the comparatively thin rainclouds. "We won the day." you observe, exhaustedly, to Sansa as she slides an arm around your armored waist. "It was bloody all around." she tells you, glancing to the other walls, at the south Lena can be seen standing over a pair of Uurlanthi, the tatters of her robe barely containing her decency as she plods towards the barracks.
