Heya /tg/, I'm new to Legend of the Five Rings. After having my first character, a bog standard Doji Courtier, killed by a generic bandit in the first combat of the first session because he sucked dick at combat, I've decided to play something that's more capable of self defense. How would I play a ninja in Legend of the Five Rings? By this I mean the guy who recognizes that being honorable often fails to get shit done, so he does dishonorable things like disguising, sneaking, and poisoning to get shit done. Has a solid cover identity. Awesome at ambushes and assassinations, awesome at noticing things, great at direct combat, great at social skills to maintain a disguise or ruse, decent at talking otherwise, decent at weaseling his way out of a duel because he sucks at that. Obviously I'm looking at the Scorpion's Shosuro Infilitrator School. It's the only ninja School in the core book. I've been told there's a Lion ninja school in Emerald Empire, the Lion's Shadow, but I don't have a PDF of that. Can anyone tell me about it? What traits, skills, and advantages should I get? The GM's kind enough to give me the XP my old character would've gotten, so that's 97 XP. What should be my cover identity? What tactics should I use? How should I cover up my dishonor? Where ARE the rules for poison (I can't find them anywhere) and how do I get my hands on some? P.S. We're Jade Magistrates and we're hunting blood sorcerers and other evil magicians in Rokugan.

Your Doji shouldn't have to suck any dick in combat at all, let alone to the death! He ought to have a bodyguard or two between him and any bandits.

>What traits, skills, and advantages should I get? A nice big air ring, some Disguise, Deception and Ninjitsu. You'll also need some bushi and High skills for your cover identity. Perhaps a little kenjutsu, Theology or Bonsai.>What should be my cover identity? Something that seems harmless on the surface and gives you decent access to a lot of places. Courtiers aren't expected to be able to use their swords, for instance, or perhap you might pass yourself off as a monk. A doctor or apothecary would be expected to have access to a lot of strange and potentially-lethal herbs.>What tactics should I use? Lot of stealth, lot of poison. You're not someone who stands and fights. You're someone who leaves traps, poisons your blade and isn't afraid to use a child as a human shield if need be.>How should I cover up my dishonor? Deception, Disguise, Stealth. There's also a merit I forget the name of which increases your APPARENT honour - that is, if someone tries to gauge your honour, they see it as higher than it really is.>Where ARE the rules for poison (I can't find them anywhere) and how do I get my hands on some? Which edition book do you have? Getting your hands on poison is basically as simple as going out into a forest and knowing which flowers to pick, which bark to peel. Alternatively, most medicinal herbs are poisonous under the right circumstances and those would be easy to acquire in any settlement - and innocenet to have on you.

Ninja, huh? On a scale of 1 to 10 of 'Things Citizens Hates in Rokugan' a ninja ranks 12. Ninja are hated more than murderers and rapists. This should motivate you to hide the fact that you're a ninja for as long as possible.

pc playing a ninja in rokugan ahaha oh this will go well there are two types: the wear pajams and sneak around being diet-goju, and the kinds that tries to erase the past and obliterate tomorrow one will get you killed by your fellow players, while the other ought to have you kill your fellow pcs and eat their souls

Book of Void (4e) has your poison rules. There's 4 poisons. I damn well hope they plan to put some more in the next book, or you'll have to steal from earlier editions.

There's at least three different builds that work of raising a ring higher than others, I'm just going to point out some stuff for the ones that aren't, "get a higher Air Ring." Water - this is your movement ring and your damage ring. Being able to move faster than others is always useful, especially when you're a dirty sneak and sneaking is fricken slow. Hitting hard is important if you're the type of person who likes making that first blow the last blow. Infiltrator rank 5 works better with high Water; more dice = more 10s. Strength is also your go to for Athletic ability. Fire - Agility and Intelligence. Agility is your sneaking, stealing, hitting and throwing trait, along with a few games and instruments. You probably don't need to go higher than 4 for a long time. Intelligence. Not just for lore skills, this is also good for poisons and other craft skills - so you can make traps, weapons or otherwise improvise in the field. Ninja, in spite of their iconic gear, don't often carry a lot of shit with them.

ITT: people guess at what would happen if the Scorpion clan weren't the kind of clan that makes people disappear for killing a valuable asset on rumour and supposition. Getting caught in black pajamas? Yes, you'll get crucified. Anything less? Your clan ensures you get some company on your trip through the kharmic cycle.

>>14753857 What are you insinuating? There are no "ninja" in the Scorpion Clan...surely, they are all honorable samurai and courtiers otherwise the entirety of the Kami blessed Hantei line would not have trusted them.
