Am I the only one here that thinks weird religious politics and the like make for good stories and settings?

I'm thinking primarily of Dune, with the whole Buddhislamic thing.
If treated seriously, the metaphysics of a religion make a good foundation for the overall logic of the rest of the setting, and the codes of conduct are pretty good models of how to build characters.
