I have a question that has been nagging at me for a while now.

I'm reading through Dan Abnett's "Gaunt's Ghosts" series, and I have to know - how the fuck do I pronounce 'las'?

Around here everyone who I've asked to read it who doesn't know the setting has pronounced it as 'lass', but at my LGS they pronounce it 'laze'. I've always thought it should we said 'laz' but I seem to be the only person who thinks so.

What's the official view, /tg/?

Unless English is not your primary language, in which case "Lay-zer".
Las - Pronounced the same as "Lays". As in "The young calf *lays* with it's mother"

I prefer Laze-gun. I have heard it pronounced Lass-gun, Lash-gun, Laff-gun, and Twinkly Stab Light.

That ass-awkward IG aircraft thing in DoW responds with "Lascannons are hot!", which sounds like "læskæen?ns", if I transcribed it correctly. Distinctive lack of "læz" and "læiz" sounds, anyway.

I can understand why it would be that way, too. Take "laser cannon", cut it down to "lascannon", then say the word repeatedly for 10000 years. It is bound to get shortened and simplified, pronunciation-wise.

Phonetic. Las, as written. People saying 'laze,' cause it's short for 'laser,' are trying too hard in the wrong direction. Laser is derived from an acronym, it has no roots or lineage, there's no reason a shortened version would be bound to the same pronunciation. If you make a word out of L-A-S-E-R, it's pronounced lazer. If you make a word out of L-A-S, it's most likely las.

My opinion.

I'm in Canada, I say layz, because I don't know what a "las" is. I know what a lass is, but that has nothing to do with the guns the IG use.

In a dev interview, I got schooled on a few 40kisms, though:
I pronounced it ca-TAK-an, which I thought sounded pretty tough. He pronounced it cata-CHAN which sounded pretty weeaboo. Also, chimera evidently isn't pronounced phonetically, since this guy shat out something that sounded like "kai-MEE-ra".

The Chimera is a mythological monster. His pronunciation is correct.

Why on Earth would you think it's pronounced like that? "-tach-" has ch, which is a soft sound.

"lahs","lays", or "lass" is just too soft. I think "laz" fits best, but "las" with a very short s would also work.

It's laz because it's a short abbreviation, not layz.

If it was called "Laser Gun" it would work, but it's not it's called a lascannon.
