SO LET'S TALK ABOUT SOME FUCKING FLUFF YOU MOTHERFUCKERS I really wish there was more done with the idea that the world isn't at war, like, all the time. In the intro to 6e's Empire army book it's indicated that it's been like 8 years since the last major Chaos invasion and in general there's not a lot of problems for the area depicted in the story. I wish there was less focus on old Karl Franz and more about generic emperors and empresses who are reasonably competent. Basically, I'd like the setting more if it scaled back a bit - more about surviving in harsh environments that are reasonable most of the time, and less about "oh no look out for that giant fucking invasion OH SHIT ANOTHER ONE"

Karl Franz has not only survived political infighting, being assassinated/replaced by a Skaven clone, fought off the largest Chaos invasion since the time of Magnus, and befriended Deathclaw, but somehow managed to hold on to his rule and usurp the popular support from the SECOND COMING OF SIGMAR.

He seems very competent.

Well.. That's pretty much how it is...

Currently (After storm of chaos, that did not happen) the empire has fought of a greenskin, a chaos and a undead invasion, at the same time. Most battles fought aren't invasions, but small marauding warbands of beasts, greenskins, undead or norse marauders.

I meant that he's like uber-competent, I'd rather see some more boring normal emperors / empresses instead of Emperor Superman. There's hundreds of years of Empire history where it was relatively normal, which is why things like the Storm of Chaos and Asavar Kul's invasion are considered unusual. There's gotta be peace at some point so that homes can be rebuilt, crops resown, and cows re-cowed.

A nice reasonable background. I wish there was more discussion of elves/dwarfs raised in human lands, because while you can go with the standard faction background for High Elves or Wood Elves or most Dwarfs, there's not as much info about ones that live in human cities. I guess you could use Discworld as a reference for Dwarfs; not as traditionalist as the mountain-dwellers, but still sort of reverent of them as being more holy or pure.

Also I find it odd that all the Elector Counts are all huge manly, fightin', fightin' men holding the tide of chaos, while the only Elector Countess is only cares about parties and dresses and being over all girly.

I don't like special characters in general, to be honest. It's always taken away from the "this could all reasonably fit within the universe" aspect of the game for me. Warhammer (both fantasy and 40k) are meant to be large enough to fit every possible battle in the larger canon, and then here comes the Emperor to help out a group of State Troops fighting some random Beastmen. Just get back to a town and do some stuff that doesn't involve fighting. Start a business. Find a nice dwarf to settle down with, you know, as a business partner. Give birth (???) to a litter of Beardlings.

The thing about WFRP is that the best way to avoid dying is to, uh, not fight people. Which is kind of counter-intuitive for an RPG, but I mean it's simulationist, you're meant to be interacting with the world in ways that make sense. Roleplay the hell out of that city life.

Finubar was probably one of the more influential Phoenix Kings, though. He re-established contact with the Empire during the time of Magnus the Pious, and it was really thanks to his desire to join forces and aid with the human nations that the Empire has a College of Magic, and was able to hold back that big Chaos invasion.

Not to mention that he basically has Tyrion and Teclis as his henchmen.

See, I think they're kind of cool when they're like random examples of famous orc warlords or Chaos champions, since those are cultures where the most important guy is the one that elbowed his way to the front and it's nice to show that they aren't all the same faceless statline.

But for the 'civilised' factions special characters ought to be flavourful but basically irrelevant characters like Luthor Huss or Gotrek Gurnisson, not anyone actually important in the fluff.

Even for Chaos or Orcs it can be like, this is my champion or warboss or general or whatever. They're a fuckin' badass and I outfitted them with all sorts of magic items. I don't really like the mentality that a pre-made dude is more badass than your own guy. I mean it doesn't bother me as much as 40k because it's still reasonably grounded, but it's like, come on, make your own legacy.

Mordheim is a great game for that, but it's naturally because it has RPG elements instead of balanced point-buy.

Diestros, yeah, and they're one of the only mentions of the country in WFRP. Basically what's established is:
- They worship Myrmidia, but argue with Tilea about where she came from.
- They got invaded by Araby in the past and the other nations came to help them.

So, I've been thinking about trying out Fantasy. I tried to get into it once before, but didn't get beyond buying a few models.

The army I've got stuff for is Lizardmen, though I'm very interested in both Brettonians and Tomb Kings.

What are your opinions on those armies? Also, I saw at the store recently that Fantasy got a new edition of the core rules relatively recently (I'm guessing its a year old at this point?). What kind of changes happened?

Tomb Kings are getting a new book and new models May 7th, so now would be a good time to start.

Brettonians are iffy right now. They're do alright if you spam peasants and trebuchets, but that's not very knightly now, is t? They should be getting an update within a year, though.

Lizardmen are pretty good this edition, from what I understand.

8th editions has been out about a year. There's a lot of changes, but here's the gist of it:

The game now favours larger blocks of infantry due to a little rule called 'steadfast'. Basically, if you outrank your opponent, the entire unit is stubborn, which makes big units of low point infantry very effective. Magic has been beefed up a bit - you now roll for power/dispel dice in the magic phase. Also, no more range guessing - you can measure whenever you want. Charge distance is now random. Chargers no longer strike first - strike order always goes by initiative. Models now 'step up', so causing wounds doesn't reduce the number of attacks a unit can make.

That's the important stuff.

Played a game yesterday against Rickies Brettonians with the morale point scenario thing. Where you count the number of standards you have, and add 2 for your general and if your total number of those points ever equals or drops below the points level for the game (2000 in our case, then you lose.)

If i'm honest I made some pretty bad mistakes with the General and his Longbeards, I thought I could flank charge his Bretts by charging through some trees, which I did, but then they made their ld check because I lost my rank bonus, and the next turn the other unit of knights charged me in the flank and then annihilated me.

If it weren't for him being coy about the Sirens locket not working on magic weapons I probably would have killed his general, although probably not. I would have if he'd just forgotten he'd given his general that magic item when I killed it with my bminers blasting charges.

I also woefully misused my Slayers too. Oh well, at least my Cannon actually killed something for a change.

Anyway, since this is part of a campaign, I could now give one of my surviving units a special skill.

And that's the story of how my Slayers learned Scout.

Aye, that be right, But not mainly for being a shitty game. It's bullshit for being a fucking expensive piece of shit.
It's really cumbersome with the tokens, cards and what not and if you want additional players - you have to buy an add-on set.
And after a playtest, I can honestly say it's not better than previous editions, just very different.

This. If it were longbows it would be a different story. If you want shooting in your O&G army either go Arrer Boys, or stock up on Doom Divers, Stone Throwers and Spear-Chukkers.
Mounted Spider Rider cavalry with shortbows are flank harrassment incarnate. They're like super-skinks.

They can be, but you still lack mobility due to that 3" move so you have to think at least two or three moves in advance which can be tricky. Otherwise they have an excellent selection of decent infantry and warmachines and have a low model count due to their elite statline so buying 2000pts worth and getting them painted etc is cheaper than it would be with most other armies.
Once you learn how to use them properly you'll be largely set for other armies.

Also, the Daemon Slayer is the most dangerous non-SC lord alive. Although not one of the most survivable.
