Does anyone else miss the time when ultramarines were just the generic marines? Nothing special, just the guys who get beaten on just as much as they beat on others, and the only odd thing about them was that they were blue. Before all the, “perfect chapter” and “Spiritual liege” crap that came about in the later editions.

Now, people HATE the new Ultras, and realize they were BETTER before, but that doesn't make them anything to actually MISS. Their absence is not felt.

I didn't really like the Ultras as Generimarines either.

Back when the codex first came out /tg/ seemed to be into the idea that the codex and lore should have centered around the Imperial Fists vs Ultramarines conflict highlighted in the fluff over the creation of the Codex Astartes, setting up a theme for the Army of divergence between strict codex adherence and codex skirting practices.

In this setting, rather than either Blandmarines OR Perfectmarines, this idea cast the Ultras as Strictmarines, obsessed with rules, form over function, and generally having a self-important high browed opinion of themselves (its been implied in some sources that a lot of marine chapters are like this, but its not something you see much in the codex, so it would actually be a pretty unique niche). This would also cast something of a subtly dark pall on the little mini-Empire they've built for themselves around their homeworld, making the implication that they run their section of space the way they think the whole Imperium should be, and may one day decide that their way of thinking should be everyone's way of thinking and plunge the galaxy into another civil war.

Soaring Hawks!
The useless bastard shrine of Elfdar Close Air Support.
They come in packs. They carry little las-miniguns. They rain down waves of low-damage shots. Their Exarch can Skyleap (a most excellent name) out of combat and come back in on a reserve roll to drop a small not-very-deadly blast attack.
They're generally criticized for being overpriced and for taking a Fast Attack slot better filled by anything else.

Nothing really wrong with the Ultramarines, just remove the derp by Mat Ward and some of the derpier stuff from 2nd edition and they're just a standard marine chapter.

Yea, the only sad part about the Autarch was that, if you give the Lord Commissar (not having it in capitals is heresy) the ability to execute enermy soldiers, you can one shot kill the Autarch.

Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Dark Angels and Space Wolves chapter fluff was pretty much all 'this chpater is the best of all chapters because flawless discipline/unstoppable rage/dark and broody/fukken wolves'.

Equally, reading codex Chaos you'd be forgiven for wondering why Chaos hasn't already taken over the whole galaxy given how tough its shit was supposed to be.

I don't have the codices in front of me right now but I'll double check later.

Note about the Smurfs: They were always a bit holier than thou, but with a tidy better writing. Then again, I was one of those people who cried manly tears during the Battle for Macragge... and some others, non Smurf related.

But yes, it would be nice to have the "old" ones back. Maybe I'd start playing with them again, and not with my Black Templars. I dropped my GK too because of the recent faggotry, impossible to find someone who doesn't call me a faggot when I want to use them.

Personally, I've found the use for Swooping Hawks as bombardment dispensers against horde armies. Strength 4, Armour piercing 5, Large blasts anywhere on the table.

I drop them behind terrain so that they either don't get shot at or next to a highly weakened unit they can wipe out or force to flee. Otherwise their performance is rather mediocre.
