Because canon storyline is determined by TCG and paper game championships, resulting in total bullshit backgroud when a deck where the general is a women wins the tournament.

That's why the storyline is very vague in the 4th core rulebook, because they know it's shit and that players should not be obliged to abide by it.

Well, it's not like there was much of a difference between men and women in Japan. Crying was seen as an acceptable behavior for men, or even a necessary one since you'd be regarded as a dick if you didn't cry at appropriate moments. Combine that with general shortness of everyone and the humongous boner the entire country had for dancing, singing, chanting and poetry, plus the fact that robes hide small tits fairly well, and you could switch any number of dudes with girls and no one would notice.

In fact Torikaebaya Monogatari is about just that. A novel about traps in ancient Japan, more likely that you think.

Actually outside the Empress none of the clan champions are determined by CCG results. Though the death of the Scorpion Champ was determined by a vote of L5R players at Gen Con, the clan is currently under regency of Bayushi (nee Torturi, nee Toku) Miyako until her and Paneki's son Ichiro is old enough to take over. A similar situation exists in the Unicorn, Chen was named regent until his son (as of yet unnamed) comes of age.

Though that being said, the armies do tend to be primarily male, which might lead to a greater rate in attrition than for women. Women, while still able and willing to serve on the front line, have a large administrative presence as well (even low ranking samurai wives handle the running of an entire household) providing them more opportunity to excel in roles of governance.

There simply aren't people of that level of awesome in the current storyline. The requirement of nine factions getting attention prevents it, as does the shift towards setting standardisation. They are now mythological figures of Rokugan's past, like the Kami and family founders. Everyone thereafter is on a slightly lesser podium just because the comparison exists.

Hida Amoro, for example. Berserker. He would go into battle and kill 400 men. At least. Couldn't tell the difference between sides, would hack up messengers who came to tell him the battle was over.
Was it because of the kami? maho? shapeshifter? Nope. He was just badass. Kuni Yori provided him with maho not to make him more powerful, but just to give him an army that wouldn't run away from his psycho bullshit. That just wouldn't happen in the current storyline.

Enlightened Madness. Multiple part story almost entirely focused on the Dragon. Great stuff ... if you like Dragon. I bet there's still people who shudder to think of how long that meant there was nothing they wanted to read. Just wouldn't happen in the current storyline.

I did something similar, except the daimyo was seduced by a shapeshifting greater shadowspawn. I ran it more like a horror story, because she was disturbing as hell and somewhat overt, but the daimyo was "enchanted" such that by the time people in the castle realized what was going on, the best men had been sent to death or the like. The remaining samurai in the castle had no courage to do anything - enter the PC's who get home from a long war or something.

The structure I'm thinking is
-Session 0: PCs invited to wedding, get to meet bride and groom.
-In between Session 0 and 1: While out trysting with one of husband's artisans, local bog hag gets jealous and takes her skin.
-Session 1: some time later (~2+ weeks), PCs return on other business. Husband's largely oblivious/an idiot, household staff is getting the fuck out/being eaten and hag is getting desperate (skin's wearing out, she doesn't want to give up the good life).

Hope none of the PCs are too pretty.

This campaign is one of the most brutal I've ever run for my pc's, it's of the vein of the tomb of iuchiban and the like. All those old l5r adventures were really dark, in retrospect. Anyway, check it out, you might find that you like it.

Well, the Tomb of Iuchiban itself is a dungeon crawl of villainously difficult proportions.

There's a bit in it where the walls are closing in - classic. And there's a little alcove the PC's can squeeze into to avoid getting crushed - with the catch that, explicitly you describe it so not all the PC's can fit in.

So the pc's have to figure out who is going to die, and go through all the betrayal or all the brotherly tears depending on how they treat eachother, and then the walls stop before actually killing anybody. It's just a mind screw.

The whole dungeon is like that, and it just gets steadily nastier. This one isn't available online I don't think, you'd have to find it on ebay or something. When I did (admittedly years ago) I found it for ten bucks.

For what its worth, it's a super good book as far as bestiaries go. It's for sure the best one they've released so far, which is probably why its hard to find.
