Okay so I absolutely abhore Necron Immortals and their pricing. I'm not buying into that shit. But I feel I need to have a squad arranged as an Elite option, just in case.

So would you have a problem if I came to the table saying that these Necron Raider Warriors I have are Immortals? Or do I need to GTFO and spend more money?

Is the squad noticeably different from the others you plan on using as Warriors? Some minor conversion work, or a paint scheme that makes it obvious they're a separate type unit? If so, no problem. Difficulties only arise when you can't tell at a quick glance whether the unit is a unit of Immortals, or just another unit of Warriors.

I was told that three months ago. Then I came home to find Grey Knights.

A friend just suggested that I replace the Raider guns with Immortal Blasters. Clever. But would that help my potential situation with the douchebags and tourneyfags?

Take a look at these. The guy made a full necron army including lord, warriors, immortals, etc using just the battleforce. Can't you do something like this?

So basically the lesson learned is I just can't take a unit straight out of the box and call it something else, I have to put in a bit of credible model/conversion work into it.

Am I following this right?

Right.

At the very least when playing with friends you need to be able to easily tell the difference between your units.

However, if you play at a local store, GW, etc you really need to follow WYSIWYG rules meaning you'll need to portray the better guns and such too.

Generally speaking, a color difference isn't enough to convey the difference in units.

Makes enough sense. So the Necron Raider Warrior models with Immortal blasters will be sufficient to satisfy this rule? My normal Necron Warriors are, well, the modern Warriors so there isn't a model distinction issue here as much as there is an armament problem.

Got to be sure on these things. Sorry if I'm going over the same things twice.

i like the body type the head is really fucked up. but nearly all of GW's older models looked shitty.

i play them like that all the time. 30 immortals is really fun. units of assault marines try to run to you because all their vehicles are immobilized they will get a face full of wounds.
