So, I'd like to check out the D&D Insider character builder (now that they've stopped updating the downloadable one). But, I also really don't want to pay $10/month for access to some stupid Silverlight application and a newsletter I won't read.

Is there any way to check it out for free? Failing that: are there any decent third-party character builders for 4e that are reasonably up-to-date?
