A group is getting together this next week to organize a game for next semester (Forgotten Realms 3.5 I think), and I think I've decided I want my character to be Indiana Jones-esque in the historian/archeologist respect. Doesn't have to be so actiony, but I want him to be able to survive and contribute to combat if possible.

I'm not sure if we're using supplements (I doubt it) so which of the basic classes would be best for such a character?

tl;dr: Indiana Jones is which 3.5 class?

You could go about this in a couple different ways, actually...

Depending on the level you'll be starting at I'd say a multiclass fighter/rogue would work out fairly well. Just make sure to put some ranks in those knowledge skills and maybe pick up skill focus, even if it is a horrible feat in 3.5. You've got the ability to tumble, you'll want to wear light armor, fighter bonus feats make the whip a viable option, the rogue's skillset is perfect for Indy.

Actually, yeah...that's just how I'd do it. Though you could have the archaelogist thing with just about any class.

If you can talk the DM into letting you use some splat books then I might suggest looking into Complete Scoundrel and Cityscape.

Eberron has a prestige class called Extreme Archaeologist which is basically Indiana Jones with the serial numbers filed off. The trouble is it's tied somewhat closely with Eberron's Action Points system, which doesn't work so well in the Realms.

For a base class, I would recommend either a Bard or, if you're really ambitious, an intelligent Barbarian. The latter you could potentially fluff as a rebellious city kid who got into archaeology after he, I dunno, stumbled across a really cool tomb while skipping class to smoke with his cronies.

Also I bet /k/ loves that filename. Glock, haw.

Ask your GM if you can use the Arcane Duelist Bard from the Pathfinder Advanced Players Guide. They make decent front line fighters who can cast a spell or two, inspire courage and you automatically get whip proficiency.
