These character designs are for a Castelvania-like game.
The main character, Walter (left) is a former soldier. Drafted at 15, he fought a war for four years, raising to the rank of veteran, until his country lost the war. He wandered through foreign territory for another year as a beggar, lost, and unwilling to go back to a land that wasn't his anymore, to people who'd certainly shun him.
Then he met the Duchess De Mercade, a young lady from a fallen branch of a destitue aristocracy. He lived in her compagny and that of her last servant, in a small drafty castle in a domain invaded by weeds and brambles.
He served her for a year or so, as a body guard, she said, but only keeping her company, for a mere three meals a day and a roof under which to sleep. But it was still a fine deal for him.
Until one day the duchess was invited into her uncle's manor for family matters. Or so he said. Walter was separated from her, and the duke's guards attacked him.
