Dear /tg/,

Do you prefer your role-playing games to have no sourcebooks, a set amount of sourcebooks announced before hand, or as many sourcebooks as the developer wants to produce? I'm rather fond of the "Limited Series" model, as it allows the creators to develop a concept while reducing the odds of thematic drift.

Pic vaguely related, since its limited, as opposed to a ray or line.

As many sourcebooks as the developer wants. They all contain stuff you can use, and you don't need to buy it if you don't want to.

I prefer my tv shows in a "limited series" format (so they don't get padded out with bullshit, or end before they're "finished").

But I prefer my RPGs to get whatever they can added to them. It's not like I'll use most of it. And if something is particularly egregious, I reserve my god-given right to bitch about it, and bitch about it LOUDLY ON THE INTERNET. (In real life I'll stick to just expressing my personal distaste.)

If you don't like the "thematic drift", there nothing that's forcing you to USE those books.

Developers are free to make whatever source books they'd like, I'll just pick and incorporate whichever ones I like into my games.

Yes, but you can look at runs like Orpheus and realize that there's stuff you can do with an intentionally limited run that doesn't happen with, say, DnD. Specific metaplots, for example.

I also find, through personal experience, that the material released tends to be better thought out and more essential to the game when the whole line is thought up in advance, as compared to the dungeons and dragons model where some splats are good and some are mindless.

I disagree. Players can always force it on you.

inb4 as GM you set all the rules, that's never been my experience with any of the 4 groups I've had as player or GM.

I prefer my systems to have the sourcebooks originally made and published by the original authors. I find the more books they pump out after the fact the more they start losing the plot and ignoring their original ideas of balance they had set down.

The purpose of the game is for everyone to have fun. If the group wants the games to have a different feel from what you want to run, and aren't having fun otherwise, then either strike a compromise, or find a new group.
