>Introduction of general themes for all characters: alchemist, animal master, apprentice, chevalier, explorer, guardian, guttersnipe, hospitaler, mercenary, noble, ordained priest, order adept, outlaw, seer, scholar

So it looks like every character is getting a theme now. I like the *concept* of themes, but I just wish they'd make themes have a cost. Even a little, token penalty, like -1 healing surge, just so it isn't an objective power boost that gives you a free encounter power and free powers swaps and doesn't cost anything at all. Like, the Escaped Slave is free Bluff training and a free encounter power that has a decent chance of turning you "invisible," and the Noble Adept gives you a free encounter 1d4+1 bonus that you can use to turn a failed attack/saving throw into a successful one.

I appreciate the concept of themes overall, but there's one thing I don't like about themes though, and that's the fact that Wizards sometimes makes blunders in design and leaves feats/races (SHADE)/magic items/entire classes underpowered. The same goes for themes. I'm absolutely sure that one of these will be extremely crappy and underpowered. Let's use mercenary as an example, and let's say that mercenary characters are one of my favorite archetypes. The DM opens up themes to the players, I look at how terrible the mercenary is, and then I either consider another theme or have to awkwardly ask for a reflavoring of another theme. In this case, themes just restricted me.

What does /tg/ think?
