Hey, /tg/, how about a Magic thread? We can discuss cards, upcoming cards, deck ideas, ask for advice, offer advice.

Also, I'm a Level 1 Judge who is bored, so you can ask me rules questions and I'll answer them to the best of my ability. To start with, let's talk about upcoming decks!

I've been testing Koth's Gambit, and I've found myself being forced to sideboard a playset of Torpor Orbs, because I get my face kicked in by SplinterArch. Looking at the way they play, there's a good chance they can be a good deck.

wizards recently admitted that they purposefully were trying to ramp up black's power, since at the time NPH was being developed black was extremely underplayed. this also somewhat explains why grave titan was considered to be so strong for awhile.

You could use the Event Locator to see if there's any stores within an 'acceptable' distance of you. I know of a lot of people who don't have a real group in their area, but there's a store an hour or so away that they'll happily drive to for FNMs and stuff, so they can actually play.

You never know when a non-store group runs events; my group plays on weekends at a pizza place, and we've gotten plenty of people come to our sanctioned events because the place showed up on the Locator and they didn't ever know there was a Magic presence beyond themselves and 2 friends in town.

Barring that, you could become a TO yourself and find a local place that's willing to let you hold small events. You could also just play on MWS or Cockatrice. Or, if you prefer playing with cards you 'own', you could do MTGO. It's pretty much MADE for people with no group.

Honestly, I don't think so. The only real things you get access to in mono-black over a two-color are Obliterator, Lich, and... yeah, that's about it. Obliterator isn't near as good as people think. If you swing, they're not going to block unless it's with a wall [and I've seen a LOT of people running Wall of Tanglecord as a deterrent in the side]. If you leave it back, nobody's gonna swing for fear of losing stuff, but you have to pick between defense and offense with it. Grave Titan can do both, swinging at them and leaving back blockers. Also, with Go for the Throat, Journey, Condemn, Jace/Roil and counters, I don't think that most decks will have trouble removing it.

Hell, I run a few copies of that black-rexian -5/-5 in my mono-red side just in case.

Blue gives you access to counters, better draw, and Jace, as well as an unblockable manland so there's really no reason to go mono-B over UB.

I really don't know how big Batterskull will be. Yes, it's a vigilant lifelinking beater that they can cheat out with the Mystic, but the bread-and-butter of Caw-Blade is the ability to tap out for shit like Jace and Gideon, and still have mana up for counters because of FaF. I don't think it's useless by any means, and it'll see play in the decks, but I don't think they'll be fetching it out first.

Then again, I could be horribly wrong. All I've tested against all week is RUG, SplinterArch, and Xeno Rangers. I wish I could test against new Caw Blade lists.

is it possible that even if wizards doesn't end up banning jace, they could restrict him in standard? i don't think they've ever actually restricted a standard card, but i think it would be a good idea.

first of all, it keeps the monetary integrity of jace intact: people with their playsets will just sell them to poorfags who couldn't afford 4. also, i personally believe it makes sense from a fluff perspective to only be able to run 1 jace in a deck.

It's POSSIBLE, but I don't know if there's a precedent for it. I doubt they'll do anything, since it might cause Caw-Blade to lose hold and Valakut to start raping again. Also, you know, Jace is rotating in a few months, so it's a bit late in the lifespan for that.

When decks like Necro, Raffinity, or Skullclamp were around, nearly every deck was based around using or stopping the delinquent cards. Jace doesn't have that problem. There are still tons of different archetypes, even amongst decks running 4x Wallet Sculptor.

Yeah. Yes, Caw-Blade or U/B control tend to 'dominate' top 8s, but there's other decks that run Jace, and another handful that don't run it at all and do all right. In the times of Raffinity, there were pretty much 2 decks; there was Affinity, and Tooth and Nail. That's it, literally. There was no room.

And for people who claim Jace is broken because he's an auto 4-of in every blue deck, and tends to be represented about 20+ times in a Top 8: you know what else has the same status? Preordain. Good cards will be used, rarity not mattering.

Yeah but how good would mill decks in standard be without JTMS and how many Preordains are simply riding on a Jace-heavy metagame? Not saying Preordain is a bad card, far from it, but that argument strikes me as somewhat dishonest. If JTMS were banned you'd see considerably less use of blue and arguably considerably less use of Preordain. Whereas if Preordain were banned you'd see a modest decrease in blue decks but probably not as much as if JTMS were.

What area do you play in where people use Jace as mill instead of a card-advantage machine? Yeah, I've won off of Jace's ultimate plenty of times, but that doesn't make my deck a mill deck. And I wasn't saying Preordain would stick around even if Jace was gone, but that a card isn't broken just because it sees lots of play.

Just to clarify I'm not "Jace is broken" guy but I do think it's kind of dumb that only two, maybe three colors on the wheel get a good Planeswalker. And I also think it's kind of dumb that a singular card can add that sort of card strength to a deck.

Maybe if JTMS cost UUU like Sorin it'd be harder to place him in any deck and thus make him a little more towards an explicitly blue card rather than something you can add to just about any deck and make that deck objectively better.

I really don't know. You'd have to kinda devote your deck to it, running lots of creature mana. I suppose you could just stick it into a creature-mana heavy deck, like an elf deck, as an efficient beater. It's got no evasion or way to dodge removal, though it is an efficient enough beater. I know it'll see play in casual Myr decks.

Different ways. Some people just hold their hand out, facing themselves [like normal] and have their opponent choose.

My favorite, personally, is to shuffle my hand and set each card face-down on the field, and roll a d6 or a d8 depending on the hand size, and pick a card, then roll again. As long as you and your opponent agree on how you're randomly discarding, any method where the card you choose is unknown to you until it's in the bin is fine.

The problem with raffinity wasn't that the format was small, the problem is the format was literally "raffinity and decks that beat raffinity 60% of the time". As such, while I can think of a couple decks from DS to BoK, raffinity just eclipsed any possible variety in the format and suppressed the value of ChK block cards.

After spending a year with it as the #1 deck I think people just wanted it gone sooner than later. The fact that improved hate did nothing to slow it down was warping other formats as well.

I quit right after the bannings (unrelated, just worn out from writing and hating playtesting) and still sold all my raffinity stuff for top dollar.

I don't recall the full story, but Trix is a combo deck based on another combo deck named after a cereal - that being Fruity Pebbles, or something else. Basically one deck within an archetype had a name, got banned or rotated, think tank made new deck and named it after another cereal.

I know Lightning angel was in (I want to say Kibler)'s pet deck in Apoc standard, Star spangled banner, which ran absorb, FTK, angel and a bunch of other midrange control stuff. It was URW, or the colours of the american flag. I don't know what team america is though so yeah. It can just be someone named a deck after a phrase, a piece of card art of a key card (that may not be in the deck) or whatever else.

One time we named a deck after a boat. I forget.

Most names have a reasoning, it's just not always due to the deck itself. Superfriends was so named because of the suite of Planeswalkers it ran; BoatBrew was a 'homebrew' deck that was made on a Magic cruise, so it was called boatbrew. I ran a mono-black control deck during Lorwyn/Alara and I called it Broken Mirror because I often opened with turn 1 Thoughtseize, turn 2 Bitterblossom, and people online would comment "lol, mirror match" and then be very confused when I'd drop Black Knights and Demigods.

Worth Wollport (might be wollpert, old timey dev) once told me in a private chat that people imagine all of the mtg world "as their kitchen table"

I wish I'd kept the screenshot, but he went on to explain that market research and so forth had taught R&D that everyone had their view of fun "as at their kitchen table" and most of their market just couldn't wrap their head around the wider enjoyment of the game. He explained it much better and less insulting, as well as talking about where he felt the line between "fun" and "balance" lay.

But yeah, not only will people bitch about a colour, they will bitch about where the colours sits AND how the colour players. (Though it is hard to imagine people who adore non-tog blue control decks, they do exist) They want what they see fun at their kitchen table.

There's nothing wrong with taking a look at lists online to get ideas, and to see how you can tweak your own deck. The problem is when you blindly copy them without really knowing how to run it, or leave in things that make ZERO sense [like running maindecked Tectonic Edges in a deck that's designed for a nonbasic heavy meta, when your deck runs almost all basics/fetches]

There's a U/B infect deck that shows up in Top 8s every now and then, a more controlling build. Only runs like 10 creatures.

Fun as fuck for casual. If you can get it haste somehow, it can even protect itself from spot removal by bouncing itself, and putting itself back out. You can use it to abuse ETB effects the same way. I used to run 3 in my janky Esper deck and I loved it, it was hilarious.

Actually that brings up a question. Most of the friends I play with are too far below my play level, to the point I can take two of them at a time and still rape face. I've tried using scrubby decks but I usually still outplay them? How do I cultivate better playstyles without just telling them what they need to do?

You suggest, rather than tell. I've got the same problem, but when I actually addressed it, I found that several people in my group build shitty decks because they don't know what else to run. I helped two or three guys this past week; I just gutted their decks, helped them come up with a new list, and let them proxy up the cards they didn't have. Their new decks still aren't exactly Tier 1, but they're much better and more consistent.

Just tell them. Say you aren't having fun beating them so handily, and rather than cripple yourself, you'd like to help them get better. Either they'll accept, and all is well, or they'll stay scrubby and say they're happy just building shitty decks and playing poorly, at which point your options are to keep raping face, scrub yourself down, or find a new group.

Hell, tell them ways to disrupt your deck.

Do not get me started on Exarch. I was handily thrashing RUG with Koth's Gambit, and I have yet to win a game against Exarch because of fucking 4 toughness. The only way I can stop it, maindeck, is to cast a kicked Burst Lightning on it, or double up on burn. Thing is, almost every deck I've seen uses Gitaxian Probe, so they know when to go off, and their counter-suite is almost always 4 Spell Pierce, 4 Dispel, so my removal is useless. Not to mention you can't even slow it down with Tumble Magnet, since they'll just tap it when the Exarch enters. My only out is running Torpor Orb in the side.

Now, in U/B, it's a lot less scary. I can bounce the Twin or the Exarch, I can kill it with a fat amount of removal, I have counters to make my kill resolve, and I run 2 maindecked BSZ. I may change that to Consume the Meek, depending.

Also, my big killer is an esper artifact deck with the aforementioned trannies greaves and blightsteel, as well as wurmcoil, full set of artifact lands, esper stormblade/arsenal thresher + SotG, Steel Overseers etc. anyway you get the point a single Shattering Spree would bring me to my knees. Yet they don't seem to figure out to run artifact removal.

I'm probably out of luck lol

Like I said, talk to them. Don't just help them build a deck, explain to them why you're making the cuts you're making, why you suggest your suggestions, how they can play better, how they can damage YOUR deck. Is it mostly just poor deckbuilding, or is it play errors? Also, just talking to them can help a lot because you can see if they care or not, rather than 'assume'.

But, yeah. If it doesn't work out, if they don't want to get better, if they're happy scrubbing it out, then just abandon hope. Do you have a small group? Live in a small town? Are these the only people you can play with?

Well I try to explain everything I do, and involve them in the deckbuilding instead of just handing them a deck, but maybe I'm being to technical or cryptic. I read magic articles religiously and it's definitely rubbed off.

I dunno, I can go to my LGS, but it's Ernie's Games, the inspiration for Bernie's Games from Penny Arcade. You can do the rest of the math.

Eh, I think I'll just start making more and more ridiculous theme decks until I find one that works haha

You can use that to see if you have more options nearby. Barring that, yeah. You can try talking to them directly and explaining your situation, asking if they'd like help, and barring that just build a new deck. Trust me, it's no fun when you're notably better/more competitive than your group.
