I wanted to play grey knights right up until I saw matt ward had written it and everyone else seemed to want to play GK as well.

Suddenly I didn't want to play grey knights again.

Am I some kind of unconscious 40k hipster? I've always avoided marines because EVERYONE seems to play them, it's why I started with IG (3e book, when no one played IG and I lost all the time)

Nothing wrong with that. The older Necron models are still usable. You could even work up a bit of fluff to explain why elements of the army look different; an alliance between two seperate Tombs, or a Tomb that's in the process of 'upgrading' itself, or something along those lines.

Except guard weren't popular or strong back then, I can't read the future and find out they're going to be later. How is that hipster? If I'd moved to them after they got a new book but were still relatively small and unplayed maybe.

Same goes with me.

I stopped playing 2 years ago and was really excited about the new GK release, I really liked the new PAGK and TAGK and wanted to order them pre-release. Though I got my hands on the codex and all of the old Grey Knight best of the best flavour was lost, so I lost interest.
And now I only want to play Witchhunters, the last of the old codieces which were there when I was playing frequently.

Honestly, that depends on your reasoning. If it's just to be different then yes, you're probably a hipster.

I personally always liked playing unpopular armies because it made it more likely that my opponents would be some other faction, which always made the whole conflict seem cooler.
