New LGS just opened up and says they might start carrying 40K stuff. Since my group doesn't really meet to roleplay much anymore I was thinking about buying an army, but knowing relatively little about 40K I'm not sure what to play.

In short, what army should I start out with for 40K?

What do you like in an army? Do you prefer to lead swarms of expendable troops, do you prefer to have a small handful of unstoppable juggernauts, or do you prefer to have a mobile strike force of specialists? Do you like infantry or tanks? Do you like flyers? Do you like giant monsters that can crush battle tanks and cut swathes through poor hapless infantry?

Mostly I prefer Artillery or mobile strike forces for skirmishing. I don't think I want to play Orks or Spess Muhreens but I'm not too familiar with the others to know. If nothing else I might just end up playing IG.

Go and see what the store policy is on playing by proxy. I torrent codexes to see if the army looks good, and if it does I'll buy the codex from the LGS and play some proxy games with quarters and pieces of cardboard as unit bases to see if they work on the table as well. That was you can try out a whole bunch of armies and you'll only be slapping down the cash for a few books. Some LGSs even have codexes for the players to use for free, so it might be even less.

I'll recommend you take a look at Elsyian Drop troops, if you're looking for something with a bit more flavour, because IG don't come much more mobile. They lack much in the way of artillery though.

Not OP but...
If I were to model these using regular imperial guard, is there a not that expensive way of making masks for them/making them look a lot less like regular guard easily?

I'm not god with greenstuff the only other idea I have at the moment is cut down lasguns. Is there another company that makes masks? (aside from forgeworld that is.)
