You can do the missions in any order at all. The order has no effect on who lives and dies at all. The choices you make do, since you need to make sure you finish everyones loyalty mission. What REALLY influences who lives and who dies is whether you have the weapon, shield, and armor upgrades for the Normandy, and who you assign to what task in the final assault.

Anyway, as to Mass Effect 2: the whole YOU MUST USE COVER IN EXACTLY THE WAY WE PLANNED FOR OR YOU DIE thing is just terrible. Come up with a way to advance that doesn't involve jumping from waist-high block to waist-high block in a manner the designers foresaw? TOO BAD LOL YOU DIE

The Reaper mission. Generally you have time for one more mission afterwards. The generally accepted order of missions is: All recruitment (Save Legion), All Loyalty, Reaper IFF, Legion Loyalty, Collectors board the Normandy, Final Run.

If I remember correctly the second you do the reaper iff mission the clock starts counting on your crew getting killed, coincedentally this is also the mission where you acquire legion.

So its a good idea if you do everything else you want to do, then do the reaper iff mission, do legions loyalty mission and then go through the mass relay, if you want to save all the crew. As you may have guessed, love that game

There WAS too much "hide behind here" in the missions, though the switch to an ammo system was also particularly grating. "no, no one runs out" was a definitive shift in tactics fluffwise at the least: you really can't just wait for the other guy to run out of ammo.

What annoyed me the most about the ammo system was how the guns didn't have a built in but slower system for when you run out of ammo. Instead of having a paperweight once out of ammo, why not have it take 5 seconds or more to reload a reduced size clip essentially so not something anyone would choose to use but when pinned down behind a handy chest high wall you could at least return a little fire.

There is not much. Just a couple of funny lines from Kal'Reegar, something along the lines of "Look out there's a geth behind you!" and a wtf moment with Tali. The real funny stuff is taking Legion on Tali's loyalty mission.
