Hey guys, newcomer to /tg/ here. Don't hurt me. Or something.

I'm about to start playing World of Darkness with some buddies, and thought it'd be nice towards them to make up my character before I get there so they won't have to bore themselves through helping me with it.

Is the Hero Lab (http://wolflair.com/index.php?context=hero_lab) any good? I'd rather not spend the money on it if there's something free that does about the same. Google just confused me further by the way.

We don't hurt here. At least not immediately. We just suck fun, like some kind of fun vampire. Not a fun vampire in the sense of being a cool vampire to have around, but I mean a fun vampire as in we suck fun.

Anywyas, Hero Labs sucks dicks. Don't bother with it for WoD, either use mythweavers or some other place that hosts WoD sheets.

Why did you bring up Hero Lab? Your character's appearance should be the last thing you think about. Think of a concept, first off. Consider what kind of characters the other players are making and roll something that will mesh well with the rest of them.

And yeah, we need to know if it's old WoD or new WoD. Also, which line?

If they're playing vampires then you should be a vampire too. The biggest part of WoD is the social aspect. How you interact with your fellow supernaturals is important, and vampires don't get along with werewolves.

Unless of course your GM is running a campaign with a custom setting where mixing like that is a usual thing. Otherwise, the vampires' Humanity and your werewolf's Harmony (assuming nWoD) would frequently conflict.

I don't know really, I'm a computer nerd or something, so I just googled for some character creators. I don't need help with aestetics or personalities, it's just mainly the character building stuff like stats and abilities that I need help with, and don't want to bother them with it.

In case anyone cares, I'm going for a guncrafter/shooter dude. Maybe some agility stuffs too, but I don't know shit about spending points in this system yet.

Yes, I was kind of sad at first thinking I wouldn't get to play werewolf, but the gm said it was cool, since they were running some really funky campaign stuffs that were tweaking the lore a bit to make it more fun for everyone. There's another dude who plays with them sometimes as a werewolf so I guess it works out.

You create a concept. Then you spend the points in an appropriate way. Was that so hard?
Half of the fun is reading the rulebook, after all.

Also, don't worry about totems. If you're the only werewolf there then you can't get a totem. They're only for packs.

Yeah, the problem is that I don't have the rulesbooks at hand right now. I've used the character creator for D&D after doing it the manual way, and make all my chars on the computer now. I know, I'm a bore, I know. I thought there'd be something like that for WoD, but I guess there's no free program.

You know what? I might decide to pester them with helping me make the character instead. Might make me a more valuable party member in the end. Oh, and they have the books; I don't.

Just download the books. They also give you a feel for the setting.
Though you did say that your GM did some homebrew...

Well then, I'm asking you veterans while stuff downloads; how worthless is a werewolf who mains assault rifles in this game, honestly.

I think it'd make a badass character if played right, but I know about the vampires + bullets = bashing damage thing. Tell me, I won't run away crying if it's a horrible concept.

Important though: oWoD or nWod? Splat (like Changeling the Lost or Changeling the Dreaming)? Building a character is stupidly easy for WoD.

nWoD is 5,4,3 Attribute dots, 11,7,4 Skill dots. 75% of Char gen is done. Also, WoD is modern horror, not D&D. It's easy to min max, but it's a terrible thing to do. Even mere optimization can be damaging

Full auto is vicious against Vampire ghouls (humans), but even if you use guns (nothing wrong with that really), Brawl is sill important for a WW.

Hmm, okay, I might just fuck the gunwielding and do a parkour/agility based character. The GM did mention that if I specced a lot of points into crafting I could techincally be able to make some sort of sci-fi ammo that'd inflict lethal on vampires. I could go on about phosphorus rounds that emit UV lights and shit, but even I think that sounds a bit... Silly.

Well, there are incendiary rounds, which are pretty normal. Pretty annoying, as they do agg damage, which vampires without fortitude can't soak. (At least in oWoD, but in nWoD it should be similar)
A Werewolf's strength lies in regeneration, health and horrible melee damage. Though guns obviously give you a range advantage.

Considering we're going to pretty much only in urban environments, that's what you get for hanging around vampires I guess, I was thinking of being some sort of rooftop camping asshole whenever we're doing a raid somewhere. Bullpup assault rifles and other high tec stuff once we've done enough harm to enemy factions to earn it according to the GM. Whom seriously better not be bullshitting me.
