I love this card for so many reasons. Chris Rahn's great generally, but the pole-arm in this image is amazing. It hints at a very well-established civilization. I love details like that. Also, list your fav artists, guys!

I would much prefer a "bad artist" with personality than most of the computer artists that all look roughly the same that they use these days. Of course I would MUCH prefer a good artist with personality and style. . . . my favorites are RKF, Quinton Hoover, Anson Maddocks, Andi Rusu, Guay. . . what was the name of the guy that did Invoke Prejudice? I think his style's really cool.

What? The Foglios aren't straight-up bad. Their style is interesting and doesn't evince any lack of familiarity with brushes, especially Kaja. Phil is definitely more of a comic book artist, but his comic book art is pretty good.

Look at the old Mishra's Factory seasons set for example of how they can do "serious" stuff really well.

Having said that their style, especially Phil's, didn't match what the other artists were doing very well, but then you could say the same of Rebecca Guay, who continues to kick ass in spite of absolutely doing her own thing.

If you want bad early Magic art, THIS, THIS IS BAD. It's like fuck dude how do even become a painter and fuck up a flower. Could he not have done it from observation of an actual rose? I don't even know, Dameon.

I've always appreciated artists that know how to paint, or at least use a drawing program to make brush strokes and the like. Argyle has some pretty good pieces but they almost always fall straight into the uncanny valley because the subject's skin is always so smooth and shiny. Like fucking plastic.

But yes, while there are a lot of average artists with rather bland styles, I don't know how someone could honestly feel confusion when looking at Jason Chan, Chippy's and Igor Kyerluk's art.

Swanland's cool for some stuff. But like Post, his artwork uses so much Black and is so specific (more than Post's) that it's only really good for certain things. Nyxathid was perfect for his art style.

I don't think Schuler was at all bad, he just seems to have done a lot of the early work in an extreme rush.

He's clearly capable of being vastly more elaborate and detailed than a lot of his bad-looking stuff--I'm guessing they were just like "hey we need these 12 cards by Tuesday, Doug".

It depends on what you want. You can build a serviceable deck for $100 or less no problem.

If you want to wipe the floor with your opponents, you might have to spend a little money.

Depends. Do you have friends who play the game "competitively"? If so, it will take a bit more dosh to make a deck that can interact with theirs in a way that doesn't make you feel bad. Because face it, /tg/, losing every time to an $800+ Jund deck isn't fun, especially when you're trying not to spend a lot of money on the hobby.

If your friends are more causal, kitchen-table types, you will probably be making fun decks that are right at the group skill level for like $30. Possibly less.

You do have a point with the card name typeface, the old one kicked ass. On the other hand, some of the borders sucked said ass due to being a horrible mess with badly matched colors (black was especially guilty of this, IMO).

Overall I'd say the new look is better, though certainly some charm has been lost in favor of clean design.

See, you GET it. The old cards, for those of us who played back then, just "look right". The typeset was part of that, as was the parchmenty-looking text box. It gave even even a shitty and confusing card with crayon-doodles for art a certain charm. Compared to that, "Modern" sets feel kinda sterile.

Do newer players all hate the old art?

It's the same thing with D&D, to me, all of the new art just seems too damn generic. The worst part about it is that older, very stylistic artists like Quinton Hoover are moving toward the more generic looking "Hollywood poster fantasy" look. Compare this piece to, say, Preacher or Krovikan Vampire.

There's some newer art that's really shit. But there is a LOT of older art that's also really shit once you take off your nostaliga goggles. Quinton Hoover is one of my bottom five MtG artists. (It's a list almost exclusively populated by old artists.)

It's the same as any "new __ vs. old __" argument; everyone remembers their favorites, and all but the most notable bad ones ( >>24419858 ) fade into obscurity.

The art's a lot more consistent within sets now, since the game's become a success and they actually have money to pay for the artists they want, but whether the styles they pick are an improvement is still just opinions.

I don't have so much problem with the work of the newer artists, the problem I have is with wotc, they restrict the artists by saying "we want exactly this and not that" and demanding multiple sketches, that's how the produce art, but in my mind, art isn't produced, it's made, and mostly it's made based on idea that isn't forced upon you
