So I am going to be making a char in a upcoming 3.5 game.
Got an idea of a char based on the pic.
Now I was thinking of going either Psion shaper/telepath a wilder, or a warlock.
What does /tg/ think this guy would be?
Also, have never really been in a game where psionics are used. So dont know any way of building one.

that pic doesnt give too much of an idea. any adventurer worth his salt can stand in such a way that the crepuscular rays from cloudbreaks look sweet, as well as make his fingers glow. if you have more of an idea than just the picture, make it known so we can help you more. if the pic IS your idea, just make any magical character ever.

Well I was going to assume that based on the pic the dude would be some sort of 'good guy' Not paladin over the top good. But clearly working towards the greater good in some way.
Didn't think of too many arcane ideas except for maybe sorcerer. I had figured it would be a magic born out of the self, not out of reading books for 10-20 years or by some divine intervention/connection with nature.
More of a magic born out of force of will. Hence my thoughts of the psionic classes or the warlock since both manifest their powers based on using their willpower to 'get shit done'.

Well speaking as someone who fucking loves the Expanded psionics handbook, and has read it over 50 times, I can give you some advice.

Make sure that everyone in the room (maybe even those not playing) know how manifesting powers works. The main thing things they must be aware of is that you cannot spend more power points then you have manifester levels on a power.

My next advice is that Wilder is fairly terrible, and I would not roll it over psion unless I had some serious fucking roleplaying reasons to do so.

For Psion; Shaper, Telepath, Egoist, and Seer have the best powers. Nomad isn't to great and the only power of note on kineticist's list is energy missile.

To suggust powers you should take I'd need to know the books you can build from, the discipline you want, and starting levels.

Not OP, but I'd like to know some good builds for Shaper. I tried the Ectopic Adept/Astral Construct focus route before but it didnt seem to be particularly strong, though the campaign didnt last very long for me to give it that much of a shot.

Either telepath or Shaper is what I was going to do.
As far as books, just asked DM, said no dragon magazines.
And he wants to limit the number of spalt books per char.
Not counting the psionics handbook/expanded psionics and complete psionics handbooks and the core books.
I am going to go with 3 other splat books.

Sure do, he's a Changeling. That way you can decide on a daily basis whether, amonsgst other things, he's got a penis, vagoo, neither, both, or a multitude of either.

That's just one of the things that makes playing a Changeling an enjoyable & entertaining rp experience.

Cmon.... Mind Probe, Dominate; Psionic. Charm, Psionic. Cloud mind, Sense link (forced). with that sort of mindreading he's used to getting his way.

OP: play a shaper. or a Seer. Wilders suck because theyre unpredictable and warlocks are one trick ponies.
Psionics fucking rocks. it makes so much more sense than vancian magic and is really versatile.

As a twist, since it is going to be a horror campaign. I am going to be the BBEG.
Apparently he read that in the heroes of horror. So I still am uncertain of Telepath, or Shaper.

also my next BBEG may end up stealing that line as his recruitment slogan.

Okay I'm back.

There are two basic rules for shaper powers:
1) Ask your DM if your using the "Only one at a time" nerf for astral construct from complete psionics. Point out that summon monster has no such restriction.
2) Minor creation is really, really,really good if you can be creative with it, without your DM hurling rulebooks at you.

Powers of note up to level 3:

First level
Energy Ray
Vigor
Astral Construct
Minor Creation
Attraction
Deja vu
Synchronicity (Complete Psi - and completely broken.)

Second Level
Ego Whip
Id insinuation
Larval flayers (Complete psi)
Knock
Tongues
Identify
Concussion blast

Third level:
Time Hop
Ectoplamic cocoon
Dispel
Solicit Psicrystal
Energy Wall (but only if you take temporal acceleration)
Mindfire (Complete Psionics- give them brain aids)

Feats:
Get a psicrystal, no excuses
Empower Power
Twin power
Linked power (complete psionics - manifest a level one power with instant cast time; enjoy your free cast time reduce and action. Good for making minor creation really useful)

Have his motive be just to help people out, even if they don't know about or don't want to. He's smarter than they are, after all. And parents make their children do things they don't want to, for their own good. So if he mucks about a bit in someone's head, as long as he's helping them, what's the problem?

Telepath is all about the save or dies, try to keep DC of your powers high.

Feats:
Get a psicrystal; no excuses.
Empower Power
Twin power
Link power
Extend power
Take metapsionics in general.

As a general rule, first level powers you take should augment well. Energy ray is your main source of damage output for a psion; augment and empower it.

I'm just spreading the word; I love the psionics ruleset, it's elegant and makes far more sense than typical vancian casting.

It makes me sad that people think that it's broken for some stupid reason, even though arcane casting does everything it does, twice, and better.
