Even people who hate the rest of the books need to admit that Dune: Messiah is good. For one thing, it is basically the epilouge to Dune (SHIT WAS WAY TOO SHORT.) I also agree with the above poster about God Emperor of Dune. I finished the series before I finished that book. Took me 3 tries to slog through that self-wankery, and this is my favorite fiction series of all time...... with one exception: Anyone else here ever read herbert's Pandora Series? Frank's original books just get progressively crazier the further out you get from Dune 1. The only thing that remains the same is how fucking awesome Duncan Idaho is. By the time you get to the last book, Chapterhouse, its just Duncan Idaho and bene gesserit bullshit all over the place and the whole galaxy is off its fucking rocker, its kind of like what 40k fluff would be if it didn't suck ass or take itself to seriously. The prequel books are pretty meh, his son doesn't have what Frank had going on, i just finished Paul of Dune, which takes place during the Jihad between Dune1 and Dune2. Wouldn't call it a fantastic contribution to literary greatness, but if you read shitty pulp black library novels then its definitely the better choice. Reading Butlerian Jihad will ruin your life, the BJ was an important turning point in Dune history, and should remain mysterious, or else you'll just be really fucking disappointed, like when you saw the Star Wars prequels and found out the Force was just lame ass microorganisms in your blood.

>>3070931 It occured to me the second time through the 6 original books that I wasn't reading a Space Opera. I was reading Frank Herbert's Magnum Opus /disguised/ as Space Opera.
It's his take on the "Angry Desert God" Jew/Christ/Muslim faiths, gender roles, economic theory, political theory, social engineering, eugenics.
What I could never figure out was why the Neo-Feudal System?

Dune 2000 first introduced their all for profit mentality with high technology.
Emperor introduced the executrix, which is pretty much a computer made up of 3 guys.

The colors of House Atreides are green and black, and their symbol is a red hawk. sauce wikipedia.
Read the first few chapters of I believe messiah, the atreides flag is described as paul describes it being planted on dozens of worlds. could be another character. but i think it is paul's thoughts, as he ponders his jyhad.
>>3076690 Because he felt like it, that's why. Because he saw religion, enviroment and fuel as more important than how mobs organize themselves. Have you ever read the dune epilogues, I dunno, the whole thing seemed very obviously just a storyboard for him to expound his beliefs. So did the Destination Void series he wrote later. Not to come off as condescending, I was just a history/politics nerd in middle school.

>>3076749 Didn't Dune II say they came from an Ice World that was totally mysterious? At least I remember the cut-scenes saying that.

Ah, I just realized I was thinking of Dune 2000, which, as far as I know, is the same game, but has westwood style live action cut scenes, and fluff may've been changed in that case.

>>3076799 No, the Ordos have always been described as originating on an ice world. Draconis something or other, I think. Which is why their special units are shown against an ice field in Dune 2.

>>3070931 I disagree completely.
IMO, Dune Messiah was a piece of shit.
I read Dune, and it was amazing. There were several, incredibly well fleshed-out "worlds" there: fremen society, Landsraad society, and most importantly Dune ecology. That was my favourite part, how detailed and believable were his descriptions of Arrakis, its flora/fauna and how it all impacted the societies that live there.
Dune Messiah sadly didn't have the eco-sci-fi stuff, but that was forgivable. Where it failed was in its writing. There were some glaring stupidities, most of all why the little enclave trying to deal with Paul (navigators, Bene Gesserit, Bene Tleilaxu) would bother inviting along a Bene Tleilaxu, and seemingly leave their plan and its execution pretty much up to said Bene Tleilaxu. I mean seriously, why? The Tleilaxu were famous for giving their victims ways out. Why the fuck would you want them masterminding your plan?
Also, Dune Messiah is the least Sci-Fi of the series. There's decent enough explanations of pretty much everything in the series. Except for the Stone Burner, and this mysterious "J Radiation" that ONLY AFFECTS THE EYES. UH-HUH. THAT'S SOME HARD FUCKING SF YOU'VE GOT THERE MR HERBERT.
Children of Dune was a relief after that.

>>3077870 They had to include the Tleilax because they were the only ones who could get close to Paul, via Hayt.
J-Rays were cool, story wise, but fucking lame sci-fi wise.
But Dune never was hard sci-fi, come on man, genetic memory, prescience, sandworms up to a mile long that survived on sand plankton, yet still enjoyed munching up huge ass spice miners? Dune was never hard sci-fi, it was Space Opera and an prediction about our future Geo-Politics, Enviromental Policy and Energy Dependence.
