3.5e D&D

my PC's are going to complete a story arc tonight, a job for a powerful arch-wizard of their home town, a free merchant city without a king.
They are 12th level mercs. a sorc, a barbarian, a spellthief, a warlock and a battle-bard. theyre after money but none of them have a real RP backstory so much.

they dont have a big overarching story as yet so after this they're going to have about 2 months of in game downtime. so what sort of reward could the mage give them?
i was going to go with around 30k gp worth. tho theyre pretty well equipped already.

Interesting.

You've got an opportunity to do something interesting here, maybe encourage roleplaying.

I've got two ideas. 1: He gives them a baby monster to raise. It imprints on them, sees them as its parents, will grow up loyal to them. A dragon's a classic example, but you might consider something like an ethereal filcher (keeps itself out of danger) or something big that'll be able to carry them all around even as an adolescent-equivalent. Players like a kickass ride.

The other idea is a guardian spirit as described in the DMG II. During the downtime, players must meditate as a group during the summoning rituals, the end product of their different natures determining what sort of spirit is bound to them.

...You know, that might not be such a bad idea, in this Anon's point of view. I wonder if anyone's actually implemented the Tarrasqueblimp into a campaign. Sure, you'd probably have to re-wire the whole damn concept of the campaign, but imagine aerial random encounters, Rocs pecking at the cords, delicious female Sorcerers flying around it trying to blow it out of the sky with magic a la Strike Witches...

I seriously didn't expect it to be so useful, but yes, that is a great idea. Remember that the Tarrasque will need your ever so faithful party members to beat the Rocs down to the ground.

If the party is notoriously stupid, expect them to jump on its back.

Of course, the reason that the Tarrasque is tied to a balloon in the first place is because it's enchanted to keep the thing from going on a rampage. The archmage figured that it would be best for the party to have it for... some reason that another Anon is gonna have to fill in, and it's only capable of travelling through flight, though it will bite opponents that get close enough to it.

about 80k of personal gear from MiC etc.
the sorc has a celestial tiger familiar and a staff or two (requisite feats included), the bard has a stack of wierd but one-day useful shit. the barbarian is tricked out with a flesh ring and a keen falchion and other critical hit gear to deal a shitton of damage to one target. warlock has a portable hole. spellthief has wands, good weapons and armour and some ability mod trinkets.

I see a problem there.

Put some emphasis on interaction with NPCs; a barmaid falls for the barbarian and his biceps, the bard hears some rumors about a guy looking for them (preferably someone they left for dead)

Speaking about equipment, give them one love potion and let them decide when (and on who) to use it.
Give them one scroll of "Summoning of Hero" which lets them summon a dead hero (provided they have a personnal belonging linking him to them, how about summoning that dead PC :) )
Or a talking sword, a jealous bitch/witch transmuted into a sword, not very powerful, but quite knowledgable.
(and she could still use a spell or two to bring mayhem in the group)

A baby Gray Render is better.

They're big, tough, very loyal, powerful without being exaggerated, and grow up fast enough that they could just stuff the lil' guy with everything they kill and he'll grow huge in a few months.

Give them something that isn't gold. Say let them design a castle with certain restrictions to keep it from getting out of hand. Or the wizard gives them part of his own castle/tower. This could include things you think the characters would like such as a harem, bathing house, animal... zoo?

That, or you could give them a pair of dice. Two six-sided dice, the sort you'd play craps with. Then, when they roll them/accidentally drop them, everybody goes to their knees and says (automatically), "The die of power! He's rolling it!"

They already work for an established merc company, the Silver and Steel Adventuring Co. they have a nice place to stay there, and all the regular facilities stated above. theyre also in good standing, have a hard but generous boss who comes in daily with jobs for the mercs there, from 1st to high level. they have a rival group who tries to out do them all the time. so there is some tense animosity there.
