Hey guys- I'm making a character in a fairly modern system, and I need a reason for my science guy to get some soldier levels in his backstory. How many soldier levels would a Gordon Freeman-like alien invasion of a lab give a guy?

d20, levels 1-20, standard stuff. And, it's more plot/realist driven, so a few is fine. He's only gonna wind up somewhere between 7 and 8.

Big industrial plants will always have scientists in them and they're forever getting kidnapped in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, maybe Freeman did some training (private or mandatory) to deal with such a possibility.

Possibly an even better one is National Service, plenty of countries force you into the armed forces for a few years when you leave school.

He wasn't actually that good of a soldier, he was just a scientist. He trained a little because it was a requirement. So I'd say that if he's level 15, only about 3-5 would go towards the actual soldiering. Most of it would be smarts and finesse.

Also, most of it really is the Mark V Hazard Suit.
