I tried so long, so fucking long to play mech tau...it was ok, but something was always off. the units were just a little point heavy, everything was too fragile, I could never get everything I wanted in an army.

and then I tried out mech guard and found... home.

note that ideally, in a higher point game, the extra points would head towards a hellhound and maybe some sents (good god I love sentinals).

As to the army list, I'm guessing you took Grenadiers, Mechanized and Storm Troopers? (I think those are a special choice.) Well, I'm not sure how well mech Guard do in 5th ed, I would imagine with the revised transporting rules that the Chimmy might be punching a little closer to it's point's cost now, but that's probably just wishful thinking.

It should do you all right, but all of your AT capability is tied up in your two lemans, and your Stormtrooper Elites with Meltas (who aren't always going to be able to come in when you want them to due to them being reserves, even with improved comms.) Maybe give one squad of Grenadiers some sort of AT heavy weapon (are you able to do that? I think that they can have a heavy weapon...) mobility will be less of a problem due to the Chimera.

It sounds like a fun army to play with, I can't really say as to how effective it will be.

I tried it a couple times, where I was still getting the hang of it (making stupid errors like wasting shots on monsterous creatures and such, using drop groups to shoot HQs instead of taking objectives). The biggest issue is on terrain heavy maps, the chims and lemans tend to block each other's firelanes.

I didn't take mechanized by mechanized means everyone has to be in a chim, which precluded any drop infantry. seeing as how saves for veli make lascannons a lot less useful, I feel that dropping meltas on armor is the best way to go now. the only problem for me is monoliths, but that's about it.

I took drop troops since it lets you cut corners on deep striking stormies- normally deepstriking stormtroopers cost extra points to do so.

with more points, I feel a squad of autocannon sentinels would add a more durable punch to deep strike shenanigans, since even with 4+ stormtroopers are fragile. any extra points could go towards another leman or a hellhound.

Ideally, there are two ways to go about it: wither pelt away with a line of 36'' 9 shot tanks plus battle cannons, or do a chimera rush and shove 16 plasma shots in his face by turn 2.

Except it doesn't. Common mistake but if you check page 55 you'll see stormtroopers do not count as guard infantry and thus cannot benefit from any doctrines at all.

Take Hardened Vets with drop troops if you want AT squads. Five BS 4 shooters with 3 melta/plasma guns for only 75 points.

But they get only 5+ saves. Not that that's a bad thing under 5th ed. I have my squads go to ground since they're only expected to get one round of shooting in.

And I had incredible lulz when in the very last turn a lone man with a plasma gun stood up having survived every morale check and cover save and immobilised a Leman Russ.
