Never run a game, but I remember one thing that another player did.
The party's managed to break the in-game economy through gross misconduct and overspending. Our piles of platinum are, for the most part, useless. One guy in our group considers it for a moment, then digs out a penny to play as a prop.
Player> "I go to a weaponsmith."
GM> "Lol, k."
Player> "I look around at the goods for a moment, and pick out a blade that suits my interests."
GM> "It's terribly expensive."
Player> Stands up from his chair, rubbing his hands together, looking terribly concerned. "Well, smith, it seems you have something I want, and I might have something you'd want, in exchange..."
GM> Expecting a Chaotic Stupid moment, but playing along. "Oh yeah?"
Player> "Yep." Holding up the penny. "This is THE Platinum Coin. You see, in a rare fit of collaboration, the gods of both luck and generosity got together and created this little trinket. It's a good luck charm, of sorts, but it only activates when you give it away... which appeases both of the gods, as you may well have guessed. Ever heard of-" Insert famous character in the GM's setting "-? He was the last owner, and he gave it to me. Now, I can't offer to sell it to you... or even to buy that blade with it... but I can offer it as a gift."
GM> Just staring at him for a moment.
Player> Just grinning. "What do you say, smith? Care for an exchanging of gifts...?"
